Smoking on left turns
Hi,
I have a 2.7 2001 Boxster, which I have owned and DE'd for 2 years.
About 2 months ago I decided to use 2nd gear on turn 8 at Homestead a hard left hander. The car put out a huge cloud of smoke, the check engine light flashed, and the computer shut down the power. I was blacked flagged.
and did not run the rest of the day. Upon restart the car let out another large cloud of smoke (enough to fill a 2-car garage!).
Since that time I have replaced the oil cooler with the S type, because there was oil in the coolant, then reaplaced the air/oil seperator, and finally inserted a reducer to make the intake of the A/O sperator smaller. Well yesterday a went around a left turn at a stop light quickly to test it, and got a meduim sized cloud of smoke in 2nd gear, and another pretty large cloud the next 2 times I started it up. There is no more oil in the coolant.
Please help. I want to go back to the track!

Re: Smoking on left turns
Thanks,
Very interesting stuff. It sounds like the only real solution is the motorsports A/O seperator. Does anyone make this besides porsche? I tried to send Scott Slauson an email, but got no response. Do you have his email address? It's also weird that this started after 2yrs on the track. I am also a DE intructor, and former SCCA racer.

Re: Smoking on left turns
I've been told by a Porsche tech that the 986 Boxsters had a particular problem with the stock VOS cracking internally and many had to be replaced under warranty. He told me you can check to see if it's working properly by taking the cap off your oil filler neck while the motor is running... put the palm of your hand over the neck, sealing-off the end with your hand. If you feel suction, then the VOS is cracked internally. If there is no suction, then it is not.

Hi, I don't think this is my problem, because I just had this AOS replaced, and there is very little vacuum. Have you heard of oil pan baffles breaking?

No, I've not heard of that -
My guess is then, that the extra speed (and extra G forces) you're carrying through that corner in 2nd gear is sloshing the oil up into the intake - as you can see from the threads I posted above, this happens a lot with Caymans. They not only smoke when pushed hard through left hand turns, (especially when the left hander follows a high speed straight where there's a lot of forward Gs under braking, followed by high Gs in the turn) but also smoke on start-up afterwards.. If the turn you mention is a long one, you might also be setting up your motor for an oil starvation situation. While you have the M96 motor, and Caymans have the M97 motors, they're very similar in the way the AOS, intake, and the oiling system work. All these problems seem to get worse when R-compound or slick tires are used, and even more so when extensive suspension modifications are made to the car to improve overall grip.
There are several threads on the oil starvation problem, you might want to look around - here's a couple I could find...

Thanks Beez for your response.
Did I mention this is happening in the street too? I went around a left hand turn at a light in 3rd gear, pretty fast. I couldn't see th smoke because it was dark, however the next morning got a large cloud of smoke on start up. This was on Z rated street tires, stock suspension, and at around 40mph. Any thoughts. remember I have a brand new AOS.
