I'm about to be shot.....

...... well hopefully not but I'm sure someone will do it once I ask my question

Hi guys... new here... from Perth, Western Australia.

I'm looking at getting a new car and I've shortlisted the Cayman as one of them. I'm not much of a "driver", I dont' mean I'm a bad driver, just not a driving fanatic (ie don't take car to track days etc).

I want to get the Cayman 'cause it's a COOL looking car. Here's the question... do people think it's a bad idea to get it in tiptronic? *ducks*
I hate driving manuals ... being stuck in a traffic jam in a manual is no fun.

How well does the car perform in auto? It's a Porsche... surely they are just as good right??

The Tiptronic is fine for what you want to do..........

You also have up/down controls on the steering wheel if you want to have some input yourself, for a 'sportier' drive..........

There are few things that I like more than driving. Still, having tip is not that bad, although I got stuck with it and I prefer manual, but its a very good transmission indeed. And if it weren't for the losses due to the torque converter, it'd be faster than the manual because it can shift faster (at least IMHO)

Get what YOU want because it is YOUR money. Most people jump on wanting the manual, but only you know your daily grind. It is not like the auto is the pits. As someone said you can control it manually to some degree.

From your post, I say get it.

I would love to have a second Cayman(S) with a tiptronic for daily driving in traffic.

Tips have come a long way in just a few years. I haven't driven a newer one, but I'm to the point of wondering if I might be as quick (or quicker) on track with the new Tip as with a manual. I know it would be an easier drive; not having to worry about precisely when to shift, matching revs, and selecting the wrong gear. Attention could be focused only on braking, steering and accelerating.

As good as Tips are now, there's no reason for manual drivers to look down on Tip drivers. The main downsides for most drivers are that they cost and weigh a little more.

Go with what you need and want. Don't feel pressure to get something that you're not comfortable with because someone says it not a "true" sports car unless it has a manual gearbox. Just go out and enjoy your Porsche whether it's manual or tip.

Based on your post, the tiptronic was made for you. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Tiptronic.

Have a Tip and really like it. Have always driven a manual so was concerned about a Tip. One member of the Unser family told me I would love it when I learned to drive it. That was correct, and took about 4 months to really feel comfortable, but car is never in drive mode always in manual. Also, feel their is no decrease in performance-----when you learn to drive it.

What's your address? *Loads gun* Haha not a silly question at all. There are a number of threads that talk about the greatness of the TipS and how to get the best out of it in terms of take offs, etc. I have a Tip and am not ashamed of having one, infact, I love it. As ARCuhTEK said, it's your money, so get what you want, your getting this option to satisfy your wants and needs, not your coworkers or whomever. Like m parey, I only drive in M mode all the time too, gives me that sense of extra driving involvment but without the 'complications' of a manual.

Oh yeah, if you decide to wait a year, you'll be happy you did because the new versions are supposed to have the DSG tranny. I'd say wait for that, it's well worth it unless you're just dying to have your Cayman now

golfguy, have a question. Have really no use for 1st gear in the Tip. Maybe it is the altitude or the conditions that I drive, but find the RPM's very limited. No stop lights for 30 miles, and drop down to the valley(6700 ft) and up twists and turns to 8000 ft. Being 102 years old shift by the sound of the engine not really by RPM's. What am I missing and do I need to relearn? Rarely use 1st gear.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I don't feel so "silly" buying an auto Porsche. That new DSG gearbox sounds great... I better find out more on it.

Have owned the other german marques before but not a Porsche... all new ground for me.

Quite excited about the prospect

Like I said before in another thread, if you get the manual you will be pissed off for 2-3 weeks and smile until you put the car away. The other way, you will be happy fpr 2-3 weeks and then pissed off the rest of the time wishing you had the manual... Like everyone said, get what you want, it is your life. Cheers

+1

At least for the drive home at 5 pm in traffic.
The drive to work at 6 or 6:30 in the a.m. is sweeter.

Like I said above. The bottom line, it is simply learning a new skill. If you are willing and have good instruction you will like it. Has nothing to do with manhood. Watch F-1 how many clutches do you see?

I am getting a tip S too, there is nothing wrong with the tiptronic transmission. in full auto mode, its quite logical, eg. when you are driving in town at slow speeds it shifts quite early, just like you would do to conserve fuel.

But when you put the pedal to the metal, it lets the rev run thru the torque band just like you would driving a manual.

its not like the tip S completely robs you of the gear selection choices, in auto mode you can press the "-" key on the steering wheel and drop a cog for over taking, after 8 seconds it goes back to auto if you don't input any further command.

there is a whole host of scenarios governing how the tip S behaves under various situations eg, hard cornering, kick down, etc. its all in the owners manual, you should download it and have a look.

I found the Tip S to be logical and intuitive

I agree with most that you should get what you want regarding your transmission. It really is a cool looking car and much easier to drive in traffic in auto.

*My Warning* Once you own and drive this car you may majically become a "driver". It really is intoxicating. I'm sure it's still fun to drive in auto...but I can tell you it's a BLAST to shift.

A clutchless manual of any type would be best but not available right now. An auto with a torque converter would drive me nuts personally.

Perhaps you should try and get a long term test drive and see if the manual can work for you because rowing those gears is intoxicating IMHO.

However, ultimately do what's best for you and I'm sure a Cayman with a tip is better than many other options out there.

Even in traffic I prefer a manual; driving is just too boring without having to shift, IMHO.
