Map / overhead light fixture removal ?

I'd like to steal some 12V power for my radar detector from the overhead/map light fixture -- I've searched w/o finding this answer, although I've seen it asked a couple of times:

How to remove this fixture? Since there are incandescent bulbs inside, I assume it's accesable, but thought I'd ask before trying to pry anything ...

thanks,

-PM.

Re: Map / overhead light fixture removal ?

I see you found one of the previous threads on this... here's another where it looks like someone tried it, and it didn't work out too well...

Re: Map / overhead light fixture removal ?

Dome light removal (HOW TO);

The dome light assembly is reomved by releasing the two metal retainer clips in the front of the assembly that holds it into the headliner. DO NOT try and remove it from the rear of the assemby as there are two fixed clips that will break off or / you will damage the headliner!

Basically you can use a thin plastic tool to get leverage between the headliner and the front of the dome light assembly and pry it down and out of the headliner from the FRONT right above the rearview mirror. It then tilts out toward the rear - replacement is reverse of removal.

As far as wiring in a radar detector, I have not found any switched 12 volts to the dome light to use for this BUT there is a constant 12 volts availble if you want that route...

There is a switched 12 volts to my rearview (auto dim) inside mirror and to the homelink garage door opener... I plan to use the homelink switched 12 volts to run my detector and hide the V1 connection module over the dome light. Once I stop driving it now that there is no snow I will do this and post a how to - (But need someone to tell me how to do the posting???)

The homelink is held into the headliner by plastic clips on the sides (Drivers and Pass) and to be removed requires that you pry one side down than the other in alternating movements down until the homelink clears the headliner and comes out. The wiring here contains a switched 12 volts and a ground for the radar detector.

Again, I will post a how to with wire colors and pictures if someone can tell me how this is done.

Hope this helps...

Re: Map / overhead light fixture removal ?

thanks for the homelink suggestion - that's what I'll use. And thanks for the description regarding how to remove it.
