Re: rear fog lights - advice

You may want to search. There is a thread on this.

But short answer is that for rears there is only one on the drivers side.

Hi, I bought an '05 987 a month ago. Both passenger and drivers side rear fogs work.

Unusual indeed. Can we see a night time photo to understand what two rear fogs and tail lights look like? It must be confusing to cars following but a photo would help.

When its foggy I'd like to be lit up as much as possible, so two rear fogs (which my Cayenne has) seems bleeding sensible - the bulbs and the circuitry looks to be there - but it would be interesting to see if RHD cars have single or double rear fogs.

Anyone have access to wiring diagrams ?

Re: rear fog lights - advice

The drivers following you cannot distinguish between the fogs and brake lights..as explained in the many topics on this as these examples discuss:

Remember it is about the person following you.

Right hand drive CS in Hong Kong has only one rear fog light. The Mercs I used to drive has two rear fog lights

Re: rear fog lights - advice

I've not seen any factory configured cars sold anywhere with two operational fog lights, but perhaps there are. Also, perhaps a prior owner modified the car.

A car with 2 lit fogs can be dangerous for 2 reasons: (1) it can make it very difficult for a following driver to see when your brake lights come on and (2) the convention is that the 1 fog is illuminated only on the passing side of the car so if that "correct" side fog bulb burns out you'd be left with 1 lit fog on the passenger side. In a LHD car, a following driver may thus incorrectly assume the remaining illuminated passenger fog (on the "wrong" side) means that the bulk of the car's width is to the right of the light, not the left as would be the case, increasing the chance of getting rear-ended. Exactly the result you hope to avoid with a fog light in poor visibility conditions. Arguably, if 1 fog makes the car easier to see, presumably 2 is better. Don't know how those positions stack up in the real world.

I am content to assume there is logic backed up by safety studies that have resulted in the 1 fog design. It wasn't to save the cost of adding another bulb.
