Acceptable OBD-II Reader?

Has anyone found an acceptable OBD-II reader with a significantly lower price than the Durametric unit? All I want to do is read out fault codes and reset the maintenance reminder.

I did the obligatory search and found nothing.

Re: Acceptable OBD-II Reader?

Sears is selling the things now. No idea how good they work though I'd expect them to read the generic OBD-II info well enough. I'd doubt seriously if they'd read the Porsche unique items or do things like reset the service messages.

Re: Acceptable OBD-II Reader?

ActronŽ for $120 is supposed to do a good basic job.

The generics don't seem to do that...at least I know my Actron won't. Found that out when I discharged the battery and the airbag light needed resetting.

Re: Acceptable OBD-II Reader?

Thanks SantaFe and Jim Soucal. I read the Actron manual on line and it will only reset the trouble codes. Makes sense, I guess, since each manufacturer would have its own maintenance philosophy.

Another possibility, does anyone sell the Durametric unit for less than $300 ?

Re: Acceptable OBD-II Reader?

Sometimes Softronic offers special deals that gets you the Durametric cable as part of the package. If you were considering a flash upgrade or SRP this might be worth asking about.
