Differences between PCM version 2.1 and 3.0
So what's different between the PCM version 2.1 and 3.0?
Is is easly upgradable? It's only a matter of upgrading the software or is it also a hardware upgrade?
Sorry for the newbie question

What we know is that it "CAN" be done (Porsche has done it) but that Porsche is NOT going to make a retrofit kit. It could be plug-n-play, it could require some reprogramming, it could require other sensors or hardware, etc. that you'd have to create, no one really knows yet...

Also, navigation is hard-drive based, rather than the DVD used in 2.1. Because of touch screen, the nav destination entry is MUCH easier. USB support also, but note that iPod/USB interface consumes one of the available 12 volt ports - the one in the arm rest storage.
Voice recognition is an option (don't think that was available for 2.1?)

Reason: Not sure about QWERTY layout

I also noticed in the new ones I've sat in that the maps are much nicer looking, and you have more possible views.

Re: Differences between PCM version 2.1 and 3.0
Being limited to DVD updgrades every few years is a hassle, and I would love to upgrade to the 3.0 PCM but here in Saudi Arabia it costs $5,500 USD to do so without adding the installation fees... OUCH!

Re: Differences between PCM version 2.1 and 3.0
I have 2.1 in my 2006 CS and 3.0 in my Cayenne s 2009. The difference is night and day. The navigation has dynamic rerouting, touchscreen, is linked to traffic messages through XM and will automatically reroute you, bluetooth phone, and IPOD linked through 3.0. You can also put in stopovers and multiple locations on your navigated route which I find extremely helpful when traveling. I believe Porsche put much thought in the upgrade. There are even more improvements I have not listed. While there are probably better stand alone units out there, I prefer to have the integration instead of something sitting on my dash.

Re: Differences between PCM version 2.1 and 3.0
Just confirmed, after doing the PCM 3.0 v 1.4 upgrade, that the touchscreen DOES indeed have QWERTY option for Nav entry. (Thought it did but it's been awhile since I set it...)
MUCH SUPERIOR to the turn-dial method on PCM 2.1

CONGRATS! May I ask how much it did cost you to do the upgrade?

FYI the upgrade/update is just for PCM 3.0 firmware (it is not an upgrade from 2.1 to 3.0, which might not even be possible since it completely different hardware). The CD-ROM was $12.95 from Suncoast.
Took about 20 minutes. Some idiosyncracies of the built-in 6-disc CD/DVD changer made it a bit challenging. Ryan @ Suncoast - thanks for the pointers.
