Question Help with M.O.S.T.!!!

About 3 weeks ago, I purchased a standard Porsche CD changer. I figured this would be an easy and great addition to the new to me CS. Unfortunately, it came with no connectors at all. I wrote to the seller, who was very nice and explained where the power cable was and then said I would need to purchase the MOST connection from the dealer. (This, by the way, doesn't match the story in the ad, but I'm not here to fry a fellow Caymanite.)

I went to the dealer to get this. All he had listed was the loom that was already in my car with all the plugs on it for the amps, the DVD NAV etc. for which he wanted $250. I didn't want all that, just an extension to put these together.

The seller sent me a single 15" or so length of MOST cable and a plug that fits in the CD. (The plug is important, for sure)

I tried using that wire and plug to link the DVD and the CD player together in the MOST chain, but the factory loom has to go in one side of the CD player plug and the plug won't reach to the CD. I'm about 5" short. What I need is a length of MOST cable and a copling to chain it to the end of the factory loom.

Who has this? (not the dealer...no such part numbr). I looked online, and found lots of intresting sites about this, but nothing that tells me if I'm really on the right track. Do car stereo installer have this stuff?

Thanks for any help. I think this is a pretty easy install if I have enough MOST cable and the coupling.

I understand about the "in" side and the "out" side of the plugs and the routing. Just need a source for the hardware.

Thanks,

-Six

This tsb will tell you the exact wiring loom you need depending on which options you have in the car, then you can contact one of our sponsor dealers with the part number and they can get one for you.

Planet Porsche - Downloads - CDC-4 CD Changer Install

Also, Eric at bumperplugs usually carries cd changer looms since he sells the Dension.

Yup. Bose and NAV.

I thought this player install would be "Attach bracket; Plug in power cable from car; Plug in input from stereo loom on car; Turn on power". It's beginning to look more complicated than putting in an Alpine or a Denison. At least those units come with wiring and lots of optical cable from what I've read in the Articles.

If I have to buy a $250 optical cable from the dealer to install this, it's going back.

I think all I need is a 6" piece of the MOST cable with a plastic end on one side and a coupler or "union" on the other. (May be able to make this from the wire I have)

Then, IN from the car to the CD, OUT of the CD to the Nav and out of the Nav to the car. I'm lacking one piece of wire and a union to extend one of the wires..That's it. These things daisy chain together and the PCM 2.1 recognizes them when they are in the loop.

Just don't know who has that optical stuff. I have the Porsche MOST plug for the back of the CDC4 and one piece of wire with the a clear plastic fitting on each end made to fit the plugs. That's more than long enough, just need the other wire from the car to be a bit longer.

Can I cut this extra piece of wire without wrecking it and make two wires? Can I make a "union" myself? Can I buy unions? Can I buy these clear ends? I would think these are fairly standard sorts of items for stereo guys.

The article on installing the stock setup, would require me to buy an expensive MOST loom from a dealer with lots of plugs, pull apart the firewall wiring which would include cutting some taped together original wriing and pull out original connectors including the one behind the brake booster. Then I'd have to unplug the NAV DVD and possibly the Bose amplifier below and re-wire all that. That is a mess and the car will not look original anymore.

I think just adding a bit of wire to the existing circuit will get the job done. (It is pretty easy to unfasten the MOST wire from the Porsche MOST plugs.) I've done that and undone that sucessfully twice now...

Just need some supplies and a little info about what I can get away with on the optical cable hookups.

So, you DIYers.... Can this MOST cable be cut? Will it still work or do you need some special tool to cut it? Can two ends be "unioned" together by putting them in opposite ends of a small piece of tight fitting plastic tubing for alignment and then taping it? Are their ready-made "unions" made for this purpose? Where do you find this stuff?

I'm so close to having this working...Just have never worked with optical cable before.

Thanks,

-Six

Re: Help with M.O.S.T.!!!

You can't cut the cable without specialized tools. You need to make sure that you got the right cable. I'll try to find the part number that you need. I believe it should be around $129 through Suncoast.

More importantly, make sure that you routed it the correct way. If you routed the CD changer wire to the Bose amp it may be possible that it doesn't fit right. There is only one way that the loom can go and then it all fits. I have PCM, Bose, Nav, Tooki, and Dension. That means my wiring harness in the front is very similar to yours. It all fits together, but it can be a stretch if you don't have it routed correctly.

*Edit* The price is $119 and it is part 997.622.713.00 if you have Bose, Nav, and a Changer.

Thanks, Smounic. I talked to a friend who does fiber optics for computers and he said the same thing, special tools for cutting Fiber. It needs to be polished on the ends with a special stone to transmit the light properly.

The I have Bose and Nav and wanted to add the changer. I see no extra plugs on the wire harness. I haven't tried to remove the harness from the firewall and have only unplugged the Fiber plug from the Nav. The brake booster is really un-pliable and intimidating and there is zero room behind it.

I was given and extra piece of the MOST wire and a plug. You can unfasten the wires from these plugs and change the routing. I saw one of the articles where someone hooked up a Denison unit in the chain that way. It seems pretty straightforward but they had Fiber cable included with the Denison unit. I think the routing will work as I've described if I can just get the right piece of wire and a union.

If there is a Porsche wire that doesn't require my removing the entire harness that's in the car now, well, I'm not happy about paying $100+ for a part to intall something that supposedly had all the hook-ups included, but I guess I'll do it.

What I'm not willing to do is tear out all the existing wiring and re-route everything. Car is in beautiful shape and I don't want to muck it up or cause any reliability issues with patchy wiring issues later.

Re: Help with M.O.S.T.!!!

I'm certain that Eric from Dension can sell you the wire that you need. You *can* splice one of the harnesses as you pointed about by disconnecting the connector. I probably have an extra wire, but I don't think I have the endpoints that you would need. I did a similar retrofit in my car.

I removed the plug by the brake booster. I actually broke the clamp that holds it into the firewall to get some extra room. I've been running it that way for over 2 years with no ill effects. Just make sure that you don't damage wires or the fiber loom if you do that.

Believe me, this is very low risk. No electricity, only light. Also only two wires involved if I get the wire I need. If not, this player is going back to the seller...not as advertised.
