Re: Weight Reduction
That is just a sad state to see your Cayman in Fort.
By the way, have you had your gallbladder and appendix removed. They may be good for a few more ounces. Maybe more if you've got some gallstones hidden in there.

Re: Weight Reduction
For those of you who would like a spreadsheet that collects all of this data, here is the one that I use. This is not prettified at all, and is very much a work in progress. It has columns for min, max, and implemented to reflect the fact that some weight reductions sort of depend - like tires - and others may or may not be implemented at a given moment. Enjoy!

Re: Weight Reduction
Fort, did you get a chance to see that topic thread from yesterday about the person here needing help with carpet removal in the passenger footwell for a speaker wire and associated equipment install? I thought it might be an area you have explored before, if you can help him out it would be appreciated, I am away from my car for awhile and can't go check myself.

Re: Weight Reduction
FF...I can't believe I just read 12 pages of thoughts and no one mentioned taking the emblem off the rear decklid. Not just for weight savings mind you, but because it holds water and looks crusty over time. I'm thinking it may be the difference between first and second place...

Re: Weight Reduction
Have we started drilling yet ? In the spirit of the 911R, you can drill hood and trunk hinges, pedals, foot rests, even the ignition key (on the old cars, not so much on a cayman), anything not structural - break out the drill !

I haven't gone there yet. So far I've only been addressing reversible mods. But it's a good suggestion...

Re: Weight Reduction
I had my car weighed today. It was still in full-gutted mode, except that the lights and mirrors were still on. It weighed 2780 lbs.
The weight claimed by Porsche for a stock Cayman S is 2954 lb. My car has Bose, PASM & heated seats as options. I estimate that those weigh 18 lbs total, so my car should have weighed 2972 as delivered, plus whatever the Metor Grey metallic paint weighs over white (paint can be pretty heavy).
The stuff I removed weighed 261 lb, so I expected my car to be at 2711. Thus, it was 61 lbs heavier than I expected. I do not know the source of the error, but I suspect that the car was heavier than Porsche's claim when it was delivered. Also, the Nitto NT01 tires that were installed today (245/40-18 front and 275/40-18 rear) were probably heavier than stock.

PASM - Porsche Active Suspension Management
|
 |
This active damping system offers continuous adjustment of individual damping forces based on current road conditions and driving style.
The driver can choose from two setup modes, ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’, using a separate ‘damper’ button on the center console. ‘Normal’ mode is designed for general road driving and circuits with uneven tarmac. ‘Sport’ mode is intended for smoother track surfaces, where the harder settings help eliminate pitch and roll.
In either mode, PASM continuously evaluates the current conditions while automatically selecting the corresponding damper rates from the respective set of mapped values.
A range of sensors are used to monitor the movement of the body under acceleration, braking and cornering maneuvers, as well as on poor road surfaces. The PASM control unit then evaluates this data and modifies the damping force on each individual wheel in accordance with the selected mode. The result is a significant reduction in body movement as well as a better grip on the road.
For example: if ‘Sport’ mode is selected, the suspension is automatically set to a harder damper rating. If the quality of the track surface falls below a certain threshold, the system immediately changes to a softer rating within the ‘Sport’ setup range. When the quality of the tarmac improves once more, PASM automatically returns to the original, harder rating.

Re: Weight Reduction
Not read he whole thread but in your final pic, why have you got a standard seat in there ?
that must weigh the most out of all the items you have taken out.

Claimed weight are always optimistic from manufacturers, so 61 lbs difference is pretty good and your calculations are pretty accurate.
How much fuel did you have in the tank?
You are about 200lbs lighter than stock, that's pretty impressive! And no doubts it makes a difference performance wise.

Metallic paint is heavier than normal paint?
I'd love to see the specs on this!
I still think your nuts for gutting your Porsche, but it does make for an interesting thread I suppose.

That's a good point about the fuel - I had 1/4 tank indicated, which probably accounts for 1/2 of the discrepancy, and perhaps the larger Nitto tires account for the rest. I'll weigh the wheel/tires assy to check.

Can anyone tell me in this photo what the black box on the left (passenger side) is and how to remove it if possible? It seems to be held in by wires from below and I can't figure how to disconnect and I'm not sure I should.
Thanks

It's a carbon cannister that is in-line with the system that sends fuel tank vapors to the engine. I couldn't get it out - and I sure tried. Those aren't wires - they're hoses. Good luck!
