09 DRL LED DIY finally installed

Acronyms rock!

I had some time on my hands so I finally installed my DRL LEDS's on my 08 CCS. I was inspired a while back by the DRL DIY article I saw here but I was looking for a bulb set closer to the 09 (lengthwise) and I finally found one.

Anyway, no cuts. 3 screws and a splice and 2 hours total. I'll post a DIY soon but here are pics in the meantime..

FYI, no bulb out problems, I spliced off the driving light wires, and I bought the bulb from ijdmtoy.com. The lights are flush with the fog spears and I had to make zero cuts to anything. just drilled 3 holes, 2 for the screws and 1 for the wire to power it. I did have to spraypaint the chrome set to make it black, but if you may want to keep it chrome if you want.

Enjoy!

Looks really good. Like OEM, which I like.
Can't wait for the article.
Great Job!

Great Job!
Thanks! Painting it with trim paint matching the spears (of course i covered my spears with invisibra so its shiny now) makes it look really oem. The angles on the drls also match the spears so its really hard to tell its NOT oem. The length is also very close to the OEM 09.

Here's a quick DIY (i'll upload here tonight) but i didn't take photos of the removal and reattachment of the spears so i'll do that later. You can refer to the install article here in the articles section as well. What i did differently was that i tapped the right drl for my led drl and the left drl for my led drl wheras the article just used one tap and spread the wire across the car.

OH by the way, you may also want to consider mounting the lights directly INSIDE THE SPEARS. just drill 8 small holes using the drl led harness as a guide and the led bulbs should slide right in. Just seal with silicone. its deep enough and it'll look really clean. I didn't since I was trying to mimic the 09's and they're slightly off middle but I think it would look cleaner on the spear.

Hiya! I was inspired by your DIY so I put drls on my car too. http://www.planetporsche.net/cayman-...tml#post371632

Thanks!

Quick question though. When you\'re driving around during the day with your lights off, do your LED drls stay on? Mine do (which is kinda the point I guess) but its really low wattage and i kinda want it entirely off. Plus, on my pass side led set, only 1 out of the 8 leds lights up (all 8 light up on drivers side) so it looks really weird.

Thoughts on how to disable it? I tried putting resistors but i dunno which ones to use. I can try the 10w100 for the lic plate bulbs but i\'m afraid it\'ll just degrade the brightness..
Hi scryana,

I disabled my fog lights and replaced them with the custom DRL's by splicing into the power/ground wires of the factory fog lights. With this setup, the DRL's act as the fog lights, so on the light switch means 2 clicks turns on the DRL (other wise aka fogs) and 3 clicks (last position) is full headlights + DRL's.

Hope this helps

Re: 09 DRL LED DIY finally installed

I installed the DRL today with the driving light changed to 9W LED as well as a flexible LED strip, all power by the driving light. The result is great as in the pic........behind the MD external grill. However, I got the Air Bag warning light switched on at the control panel but without text message. Can anyone tell me why and any solution for it ? I have to get my Cayman back to the dealer....

Is there a reason you went with so many lights and a light bar?

This LED thing is getting very strange.

As far as your warning sensor, did you disconnect the battery?

Re: 09 DRL LED DIY finally installed

I like what you have done. Where did you purchase the LED bar? Also, where did you did you get power connection for daytime running (with headlight/tail light off)? After all is that not what DRL means?

Thanks,
Stevie

Re: 09 DRL LED DIY finally installed

Thanks Stevie.

I got the bar from iJdmtoy.com

iJDMTOY JDM Xenon White or Ultra Blue 8-LED Daytime Running Light Kit (aka Day Driving Lamps)

and its the 4inch one. I think the 6inch length one maybe better but its thicker and i opted it for the thinner strip.

You'll have to spraypaint the chrome to black to match. Also, be wary that if you'll need to get matching HID headlamps too since the color of the strip is around 7000k (maybe even 8000) and stock is 4300K. I put Philips Ultinon D2S 6000K on my HIDs and they're closer but no cigar.

Oh by the way, I spliced the current DRL bulb on the car and that's where im getting power to the DRL strip. its not automatic and I like it that way.

You may also want to get a light strip instead from superbright LEDS or

iJDMTOY Audi A5 Style Xenon White 20 inches 20-SMD LED Flexible LED Strip Lights

they're really white and match stock. I have a strip as well and theyr'e waterproof and could have worked but I decided I like my current setup just fine.

Hey Cyrus,

I didn't bump into your problem but it looks like you're taking up too much power rather than not enough power which causes the bulb out error (like many people have so we have to add resistors).

If It were me, i'd replace my fogs with an LED (that's what I did), then splice that wire to power to power your LEDS and maybe the airbag warning will disappear.

But I'm no pro so I dunno

scryana,
this is the idea that i've been entertaining, too. can you say a bit more about your thoughts here? "8 small holes using the...harness, seal with silicone". what do you mean by that?

So there's 2 ways of doing this.

You can use the DRL lights which is pretty much 8 leds soldered onto a plastic strip and covered. you take the cover off and you have the 8leds exposed. You can put the 8 leds INSIDE the spear and drill 8 small holes where they can protrude out of the spears. you'll need to seal the plastic peice that has the solder inside the spear so that's where you put the silicone. I've got a spare set of spears (my stock silver ones) if you want a spare set.

Here's a photo of the LED to better explain (check out photo 7 and 8)

http://picasaweb.google.com/PorscheCayman987c/DRLDIY

Second way is to get a waterproof light bar from superbrightleds. They're these little light bars like this

Super Bright LEDs - Flexible Light Bars and Strips

put it inside the spear, get an exacto knife and cut a thin rectangle hole in the spear so when the lights light up, then it'll look the the new led lights.

Its hard to explain without pictures but i haven't actually done it rather conceptually so sorry.

I may get bored this weekend and actually do it since I have a spare set of spears and a light strip already so we'll see.

Re: 09 DRL LED DIY finally installed

also check out these articles, they're great

2009 Cayman LED Daytime Running Lights Style $40 (LED DRL Mod) - Articles

MY09 DRL is really bright?

I'm seriously considering buying the 09 porsche DRL parts and installing them on my 08. doesn't look too bad. But that will be after I install the LED strip in the rear lights. its an easy job just take off the light and put the light strip in but i just have been so busy at work.

Re: 09 DRL LED DIY finally installed

Scryana,

Thanks for the link to the JDM site. I found it very interesting with lots of great info and products. However, I think there may be some confusion on the acronym DRL as it is used in the JDM product description… Their products are described as “Daytime Running Lights” but simply connecting them to the parking lights does not qualify them as Daytime Running Lights. Please allow me to explain:

Using these LEDs connected to the parking lights is actually ‘running your parking lights with an LED bar’ compared to the NHTSA’s ‘daytime running lights’ which is the running of a set of front mounted high visibility lighting that is ‘automatically switched on when the vehicle is moving forward’ and is independent of the running lights or vehicle headlights (that includes the side and rear taillights).

The reason I pointed this out is because I am interested in running these LEDs automatically as per NHTSA’s definition and did not find how to achieve this solution in your article. If I have missed this information, can you please bring it to my attention. Some manufacturers (BMW, I know for sure) has this as a programmable option.

Thanks,
-Stevie

UPDATE EDIT: I just checked the PIWIS Programming Codes and, it does in fact have an option for "Daylight Running Lights". And, if you have PCM Sports Chrono Plus you can chage this option yourself, without the dealers PIWIS programmer. But, I don't what lights are controlled automatically.

Re: 09 DRL LED DIY finally installed

thanks for elaborating, makes much more sense now.
very cool way to go, i think. (inside the spear). in fact i think it would look cleanest that way.

you'd be blazing the trail here i think if you wind up doing this, so keep us posted. i still need to find the time to polish off my turbo install post so until i get that done i won't be able to tackle the DRLs but would love to follow your story on it, should you continue to push it.

best,
-aw1.

Re: 09 DRL LED DIY finally installed

Hi Stevie,

I hope you figure out how to get the lights to turn on automatically per DRL. I think even on the 09s the LED's aren't automatic. Maybe it is in the computer but I don't know how to set it.

I just manually turn it on and they light up. I'm ok with it and rather prefer it so i can decide if i want them off
