Car will not start with radio on

Tried to start my car yesterday and all I got a clicking noise coming out of the dash, but the car would not start and the trip computer reset itself. Turned off the radio car started right up.

Is this gremlin a mere relay that needs to hunted down and replaced or is there something more serious a foot?

Most peculiar. I would say something isn't right in electric ladyland.

Re: Car will not start with radio on

Yeah, I would have to agree that it sounds like the battery. I also have an 06 CS and I replaced my battery in Dec because starting was getting a little sluggish. If you want to see if it's the radio try starting the car with the radio off and as many of the lights on.

Already have done this. The battery appears to be in good shape it will start with lights on and everything else in the world turned on. Just not the radio.

Re: Car will not start with radio on

It should still be under warranty, unless it has more than 50k miles on it - take it into a dealer, and the computer will read all the electrical modules... they should be able to diagnose it pretty quickly.

Congratulations! This is the most bizzarre automotive problem I've heard in a very long time. I can't wait to hear what the dealer determines is the cause, so please post it when you know!

Re: Car will not start with radio on

Wow! This is a first for me also. Does this happen every time the radio is on before you try and crank it, or was this a one time problem? I am taking a shot at this and would be looking at a possible faulty PAS control unit. If it only happened one time I would be looking at battery condition. Is everything original in the car or is there aftermarket electrical add-ons that could be contributing to the problem?

Re: Car will not start with radio on

Years ago (1980's) I had an Audi that would not start if (and only if) the radio was on and the car was in reverse. I had it into the shop many times before they found out what was wrong with it. It turned out that I had a bad ground in the back-up light. I doubt that the same thing is going on in your car but it just goes to show how something simple can cause endless headaches.

How long did you have the radio on? Was the key in the ignition? Did you by any chance remove and reinsert the key before you tried starting the car? Did you repeat the test? I am pretty sure this is standard behaviour and covered in the manual. If the key stays in the ignition for few minutes, it needs to be removed and reinserted to start the car.

Maybe it thinks it's Kitt, the wonder car, and doesn't like your choice of music.

Re: Car will not start with radio on

Maybe the radio had a fight with your battery and they are just not talking to each other.
