Trunk strut noise

Since day 1 I had to contend with a rattle, click, clunk noise over sharp bumps. I tried all the fixes documented to date, including lowering the trunk latch and making it tighter. Removed the trunk liner and fixed the trunk light wiring vibrating against the lid, removed and applied felt tape to tail light assemblies, aaaarrrgggghhhhhh, all to no avail. I was ready to weld the darn thing shut permanently.

The noise was from mostly the passenger side in the trunk. In utter frustration, determined to get to the bottom of the issue, I removed the passenger side trunk lift strut. That was it. For all those who tried everything and has not found a fix yet, remove the strut from the side you hear the sound from. 2 metal clips, push the clip with a flat blade scredriver carefully towards the tip of the strut. Clips pop out. Gently tag on the ends and they are out. Such a little thing and such a huge annoyance. Guess what, I am happy.

Re: Trunk strut noise

So what part of the strut was making the noise? The mounts? Was it hitting something? The strut itself was rattling???

Mounts were good. Hitting nothing. The struts itself was rattling with every miniscule move over sharp bumps. Blody noisy.

Get it out. If the noise continues, you can re-install it in 2 minutes.

Re: Trunk strut noise

Kwaaiman, not much to get the photo of. Put the flat balde screwdriver against the flat portion of the strut mount between the metal clip and mount, gentley pry and push towards the tips of the notches. Then pop out the struts from the mounts. Easy.

ok i see you just removed the strut. Thought there was a clip making a noise. Dealer has already replaced it. The only way to make sure it is the strut is to remove it.

Re: Trunk strut noise

Does it happen in 2008 CS as well as 2007 CS?

Re: Trunk strut noise

Mine is a 2008 CS.

Good news.

It was not the strut, but the rear hatch hinge that is hiding in the roof was making the noise. As the strut was applying some pressure against the hinge, it was squeaking going over the bumps. Once the strut was removed thare was no reverse pressure against the hatch hinge and it stopped the noise.

The fix you say? 2 squirts of spray silicon lube with a narrow tube right onto the hinge.... no more noise. The strut is back in now. I am happy.

Problem duration just about 1 year. The fix, 5 seconds.
