Unhappy Weird Revving

Well like the title states.... a freind of mine is having some trouble with his newly purchased, previously owned 2006 cayman S (tiptronic)

Well here goes trying to explain what is happening:

If he is cruising on 5th gear at let's say 70 km/h and he slighty starts to apply more throttle (very slightly), the RPM will start to rise from 2000 to 2500 and then suddenly will drop back down to 2000 RPM.... its as if the gear is slipping.(no gear changing is occurring since it is in the last gear, and he is really gently applying his foot to the gas).

This is happening more frequently now and its weird because the car has only 60,000 km on it.

We went ahead and took it to our local porsche dealer and they informed us that the transmission might need changing and that the previous owner probably drove it too hard ........ arent porsches supposed to be driven hard?

total cost of the replacement is approximately 10,500 USD..... now that is steep especially since he doesnt have a warranty

I was just wondering if any of you guys have experienced anything like this or if in fact this might not require a transmission change and is just some sensor that needs a restart(mind you they first did that at the dealer).

Thanks in advance for any help.

on a more cheerful note... my 2009 arrives on April 6th... pictures will be posted !

Re: Weird Revving

Does it happen in every gear or just fifth? If he's on the throttle hard, does the car rev normally? Does it only happen in this rev-range?

I'd try to seek an independent Porsche mechanic and get some more professional/technical opinions.

Re: Weird Revving

Just happens in 5th gear

if he is on he throttle hard then no problems what so ever. Only happens when he is slightly applying pressure on the throttle so that it doesn't shift down to 4th.

Yes only in the 2k to 2.5k rev range.

Re: Weird Revving

Maybe other tiptronic drivers can report in, the only tiptronic I've driven is a Cayenne...

doesn't seem like an issue where he'd need a new transmission though, I don't buy the line the dealer gave you since the tiptronic doesn't really let you "drive it too hard"... you can't over-rev it or really influence how fast it shifts, etc.
