Sport Exhaust Problem

Hi Guys,

My Cayman S with the sport exhaust has a problem, which is when you activate the "sport" button, the exhaust sounds like someone has stuffed the piped with a pair of old socks! Car performs really well but just sounds really shite!

I've taken the car back in to my dealer and the tech guy said there is nothing wrong with it, I really beg to differ. There is no way you would spend the money I did on an exhaust system that sounds really muffled! HELP!

I'm taking it back in and I am demanding that I listen to another Porsche with a sport exhaust box... there is hardly any diff in sound from "normal" to "Sport", in fact the sport sounds just ****.

Any ideas?
Any areas in which I should point out to the dealer?

HELP!

Re: Sport Exhaust Problem

I have PSE on my car. It is not a loud system. Remember that it is automatically switched off between 25-40 mph so that it meets German noise standards in that mph range. Supposedly you can disconnect the valves in the rear and it will be on all the time. I haven't tried that yet, but am thinking about it. If you research, you will find audio clips of the various different exhaust systems including PSE. Listening to the clips shows that this system is pretty quiet. IMO it is not worth the money.

I did a dyno run on my car and with the system on there was no hp gain, but the torque curve did show changes. Look for my car in the dyno chart section.

If I had the money, I would install a Fabspeed. I have heard that system and really like it. Would also coat the pipes between the headers and muffler with Jet-Hot.

Re: Sport Exhaust Problem

I've heard that the PSE sounds good in the idle to low mid-range RPMs, then get quiet in the mid range, then ramp back up at the high end. However, I have no experience in person.

Re: Sport Exhaust Problem

I have to disagree. It is a sweet sound, with a wake up on start, (nondescript on idle - but who idles?) and a bit of burble bite overrun. (Not like my old 911 with stingers but that's no longer allowed even at the track). I don't spend enough time in the sonic transition zone to care about it not being loud everywhere. You can get a bit of the sound from this road test:

I end up pushing the sport muffler button every time i drive, and it always, as the man says, "pushes mine." l have a preset grin for bridge overpasses and tunnels.
