qualitech's cel questions

hi santa fe,

i own a new cayman s for 3 weeks & have 700KM.

just 3 days ago i stopped at the traffic light & the car started to viabrate whilst the revs were descending from 1000rpm to 500rpm, up & down, after a few seconds i got "check engine see workshop".
i stalled the car for a few minutes & started it again with the same problem.
a day after i bought a fuel additive filled the car with it & then petrol.
drove the car, it stopped viabrating but still have check eng...... warning.
i called my dealer & he told me to tow the car & not drive till the garage which is an hour away.
have you heard of such phenomenoms?

thank you,

zohar

Re: check engine see w....

Check engine lights can be caused for a number of different reasons. The dealer has the equipment to read the code and tell you exactly what the problem is and can either clear the light and/or fix the problem under warranty. I am guessing that they are being very conservative with the suggestion to not drive the car but I'd follow their directions since you are still under warranty. A fuel additive would not cure what issue is causing the check engine light. Hopefully you are using the proper grade of fuel.

Re: check engine see w....

I have not. Why not start a new post in the Cayman Complaints forum and ask if anyone has there.

if it fuel because of a poor filling station for instance water in the fuel, could that lead to long term engine damage?
if it's not fuel, what possible problems after 700km could occur to the engine?

thank you, sorry for too many questions.

Re: check engine see w....

Impossible to tell without knowing the check engine light code. You also should do a search here on "check engine light" and see what other posts have been made. Planet Porsche - Search Forums and like I suggested start a new thread in the Cayman and Boxster Complaints - Planet Porsche forum and you probably will get more responses.

Re: winter storage questions

If your car starts and you have a CEL, it's most likely related to emissions/emissions equipment, be it a misfire, defective/missing gas cap, rich/lean conditions, etc. I said if car starts because if a critical sensor is the problem, engine wouldn't start.

You don't want to drive your car too long with a CEL without knowing what it is. But I wouldn't want it towed if it's due to a misfire. What I'd do if I ever get a CEL after a prolongued hybernation is to simply disconnect the battery again for 10 minutes. If CEL persists, take it in. If not, you just saved your car from a trip nobody enjoys. No harm other than a bit of wrenching. Take care.

assemblies) there is a higher number of failures early on, then this failure number drops quite steeply and stays very low for a long time, then the failure curve starts to rise again as old age starts to play a role.

The curve sort of looks like a bath tub viewed in profile.

If car under warranty your best plan of action is to get car to dealer for diagnosis and repair. It is probably nothing serious. A bad plug, coil, injector.

These are a few of the many other critical parts to an engine that all add their failures to the overall failure rate of the system.

Water in gas quite rare. Stale gas might be a possibility but the effect from this is usually transitory.

Get car to a qualified shop, OPC, Ithink is the term, and let the experts look car over.

Sincerely,

Rockster.
