Key under warranty?

I just purchased an '06 CS 2 weeks ago, and the previous owner mailed me the 2nd key after finally finding it. It wouldn't function, so I replaced the battery. The LED illuminates, but the car fails to respond to any open/lock/unlock commands. When attempting to start the car with it, the alarm goes off. So, obviously, the car doesn't recognize this key as one of it's own.
Before I contact the dealer, does anyone know if the key is a warranty item?
By the way, I also have a "small" noise coming from the right-rear, initiated by irregularities in the road surface (yes, bumps)....and the hatch "clunks" over hard bumps, but only when both rear wheels hit at the same time. I will investigate the fixes listed on this forum ASAP.
I am new here, and look forward to regular reading!
Also, this is my 1st Porsche (but have driven many over the years). The smile keeps getting bigger and bigger....especially over 4K RPM! Woo-Hoooooo!!

Thx for any help!!

Re: Key under warranty?

I bought my Croc used last year. It only came with one key and I was told another one would cost $200 for metal key part (ordered from PCNA via dealer only, then another roughly $300 for Fob component (or whatever you call the end with buttons) and 1 hour labor for programming. I just got the metal part and later learned that while it can open a door, it cannot start the car as the electronics need to detect a signal from the Fob. Just be careful with your only key and wait for some kind of service/parts special from your dealer.

In the meantime just enjoy the car !

Re: Key under warranty?

Did you follow the key-mating procedure in the users manual first? I forget the real name and the procedure but its close to putting the key in and turning to 'on' then pressing the door open button for several seconds. I'm sure it will work out for you. But yes, you can have the key checked out on warranty. I had the internals replaced on mine and I didn't even know it was broken!

If you actually need to buy a key, I'd go through a site sponsor 'Suncoast' since they sell the version 2 fob for about $100.

The other thing you are talking about sounds like the common 'trunk thunk' that is discussed a lot on here - just search for it. But if so, there's nothing wrong with your car and there are a few fixes for it listed on this site.

Your car came with only 1 key How so? Mine came with 3 (2 fobs and 1 spare)

The key reprogramming technique is explained here and has helped me a number of times. http://www.planetporsche.net/cayman-...hlight=key+fob

Re: Key under warranty?

Hey tme110
I looked thru the manual and didn't see anything about the key procedure you mention. I WILL look again tho.....thank you VERY much for bringing it to my attention!
And Tesla-
Thank YOU as well....I will go to that link now and check it out.
I realize the cost for these keys, so that's why I am a bit pissed at the previous owner (for several things beyond the key issue tho...AARRGGHH!!) for not being completely honest with me about a few things!
I guess when we buy from a private party we save in dollar signs, but pay with some aggravation, eh?
Thx again to those who have responded....I will post progress/results.

UPDATE:
I tried the key-reprogramming procedure you mentioned...no-good.
I also looked again, front-to-back, thru the owner's manual for something relating to all this...I found nothing other than the 2 pages relating to battery replacement, etc.
I'll be going to the dealer tomorrow for some tire issues, and will have a small "laundry list" of warranty items for them to check, including this key issue.
There are a couple places that the "paint" is wearing off (the ring around the light switch, and the black color on the fan/blower switch is wearing and it's turning white). I've read quite a few posts here saying these type things have been fixed under warranty. And I will inquire about the service bulletin that installs "bumpers" on the hatch to help with the "thunk" I get at times.
We'll see how good this dealership is (Rockford, IL)...if they don't make me smile, Motorwerks of Barrington is only 60 minutes away.
Thanx again for everyone's input on this. I will post results as they come in.

Re: Key under warranty?

I have a '06 Cs which I bought used. Just last week i had one FOB replaced because I lost one of the buttons because it constantly fell apart. Full waranty no issues. They need all keys available though when they program the new FOB or the keys they do not have will not work. Did not cost me a nickel and the new FOB is much nicer, full black with actual a metal, chrome key ring.

Re: Key under warranty?

tp, now would be a very good time to check to make sure the wheel lock tool is where it is supposed to be.

Re: Key under warranty?

If the previous owner shafted you on the second key the wheel lock could be missing too. Probably not but you don't want to find out in difficult conditions. If has gone missing you will be up the proverbial creek...for example http://www.planetporsche.net/cayman-...blem-help.html
