New engine coming.....
Hello to everyone,
to make a long story short I have a 2007 CS with approx 19.000 km (12.000 miles) on it.
During it's history I have been left on foot 4 times because of coolant leaks, twice a radiator hose and twice the overflow tank (can't remember the exact name). Plus I had a number of minor leaks (even including the filling cap) which forced me to refill continuously until destination.
After all the relative repairs Porsche finally decided that they have to change the engine as the cooling system builds up pressure until something finally gives up…usually a hose or a clamp….
What I’m not impressed with is that they are not giving me a new engine but an exchange unit….they assured me that it’s even better than a new and has completely been rebuilt!!!!
Do any of you have any experience with such engines?
I’ve been very tempted to get an 3.8 x-51 in but everything is under warranty and they wouldn't accept a trade…..
I should be getting the car back this week....

Re: New engine coming.....
So sorry to hear about your troubles. That is very uncharacteristic of any modern day Porsche.
I wouldn't have any problem with a rebuilt engine. As they said, it will be much fresher than your 19,000 km engine. The block of our M97 engines is a very expensive and exclussive part. I'm honestly suprised that I hear so little about remanufactured engines. Nice to see them recycling the blocks.
I too would be itching like heck to drop an X-51 in there. Who is doing the removal/reinstallation? If it's a private shop, now might be the time to consider that 3.8. You would get the most money for the 3.4 if you can sell it as a freshly remanufactured engine. In the USA, used M97s are selling for around $5,000. A fresh rebuilt unit should get more.
Cayman-S,
Don't let this spook you. For every one of these problemed cars we read about, there are thousands of healthy good running models on the road. No company is perfect, so there will be a lemon from time to time. It's how they deal with it that defines their commitment to us.

Re: New engine coming.....
The rebuilt engines are new engines that didn’t make the required HP after dyno testing. They are pulled from the assembly line process, taken apart, and rebuilt to bring it up to specs. With the extra attention they get, they might even put out more than the typical engine.

Re: New engine coming.....
How much is a new or remanufactured engine from Porsche? I assume it's a long block?

I don't know for sure, but I've heard figures between $11K - $17K.

Wow....where did you fing this info?
I do agree that rebuilt is usually good as new, in some ways I guess it could be better.

Re: New engine coming.....
New Factory Engine - ~$24K
Factory Remanufactured (with warranty) - ~ $14.5K minus $5.5K core, so ~$9K (if the core is OK)
Used $5K to $7.5K
or you can by used and rebuild it as a proper race motor and spend...

I saw it on another p-car forum a couple of times. It sounds right because the engines are required to meet advertised ratings and Porsche wouldn't just toss a completed engine. I also read the engines are set up to exceed the stated hp by 2 to 3 percent to give them some leeway.

Re: New engine coming.....
The remanufactured ones are also engines that have been replaced under warranty and well, remanufactured. Porsche as well as BMW require the dealer to send the engine back when removed. Most aren't even allowed to crack it open unless they are disputing a claim. Sometimes in those cases they'll send techs over from the motherland as was the case with a friend's CGT.

Re: New engine coming.....
Hello,
I just got my car back with the "brand new" engine.....everything looks fine though I have to go through some break in so I can't really tell much about it now......
Good things:
It was very quick, two weeks for an engine swap looks lightning fast compared to two weeks for wheel bearings and a wiper on an Audi A4!!!
I get a "fresh" engine!!! Not that mine had really been round the block much...
The warranty is extended.....
Bad things:
It's really annoying to go through break in, though shorter. It's ok when you have the excitement of the new car, but now.....
My exhaust tips are somewhat 2 or 3 " lower than before. Well lower than the opening....they'll fix it upon first check.
I got the car back with coolant splashes all over the back of the cabin!!!
The clutch is different and definitely not a fantastic feeling. Would that be that it has to adapt to the new crankshaft plate?? We'll see.
Uncertain about :
Somebody wrote that the exchange engines are the ones that aren't born up to spec??? Will they be as good as a new one once fixed??
PS
It was an official Porsche dealership actually owned by Porsche....no 3.8 swap

Re: New engine coming.....
Actually regarding engine swaps:
The dealer told me that 3.4 or 3.8 are really close in price (around 11 12K Euros) if you buy an exchange unit (you give back yours and get a "new" reconditioned one).
But they only exchange apples for apples, no 3.4 for 3.8....

Re: New engine coming.....
The clutch should lighten a little as it breaks in.
The engine is as good as new. Maybe better.
Low exhaust sounds like an alignment issue. They can adjust it.
I think it takes about 3 hours to remove the engine from our cars. Wow...

Re: New engine coming.....
I was actually pleased with Porsche for having another engine in stock and shipping it down to Italy within a week.....and installing it
On the other hand it took Audi the same time to source a bearing and a wiper from their suppliers because they didn't have any in stock!!!!

I think that's because the 3.4 and the 3.8 block has the exact same dimension. Mounting the 3.8 into our Caymans is fairly straight forward. In fact I would like to sell my used 3.4 engine, can anyone advice how I can go about doing it?
