Re: How to tell when to replace brake pads?
Do you know how/where to look to see the thickness of the pads? Get a flashlight, and sometimes a mechanic's mirror (a mirror on the end of a stick) can help. Look into your brake calipers, right where the rotor is. The part that contacts the rotor is the pad itself. The backing plate of the pad is about 2mm, so in general terms, if the pad is about as thick as the backing plate, it's getting near the time to replace them.
Check out these articles on replacing the pads. None of the pictures are at quite the right angle to duplicate what you see when you check your pads for wear, but they will give you some idea what to look for.

But like Brad said above, wearing into your sensors is no big deal at all. They are not that much extra to replace them. The insulation on them tends to dry out and crack anyways, just due to the heat from the brakes, to replacing them is not a bad idea anyways. Plus, if you replace your pads too soon, you are loosing money on pad wear, and that could easily cost you more than the cost of the sensors.
