Which oil filter to use?

I am new to this forum and have just recently purchased a 2006 Cayman S. I love this car! It has about 11300 miles on it and I thought I would start out by changing the oil. I have read most of the posts here about filters and had a question. When I search online for a filter, nearly everyone sells the same types of filters. A few I recognize, such as Bosch, Fram, Wix, and K&N, but a few I have not, such as Hastings, Mahle, Hengst, and Beck Arnley. The Beck Arnley always is the most expensive. All say they are direct OEM replacements. Does anyone have any knowledge of what is the best filter to buy? Thanks. Skip

Re: Which oil filter to use?

FWIW, Mahle, Hengst and Mann are all suppliers of Porsche's "factory" oil filters; the same ones you can buy from your dealer, but not in a Porsche box.

I see you are in Texas, and if you are in the Dallas area check out the special that RUF is offering for an oil change, $99.99, this saturday only. If I hadn't had them change my oil a few weeks ago I would be so in on this. Check for Hans' post.

Re: Which oil filter to use?

Welcome to the swamp.

Be sure to check the articles section for an oil change article.

Lots of folks get their filters from one of our sponsors - like Suncoast.

With that amount of miles, you may not need an oil change. Where did you buy the car? A dealer? Private Party? A Porsche dealer?

Check you manuals. If servicing was done, it would be stamped and signed by the dealership. And if it wasn't, you should have a year left on the factory warranty. If it were me, and I didn't get the car from a dealer, I would consider having them do a change/minor service. and brake fluid replacement. That way they could check for any leaks/odes etc, and give the car a clean bill of health, while still under warranty.

Re: Which oil filter to use?

Thanks everyone. Fmarshall, I did a search and found out about Suncoast, so I ended up calling them and ordering the filter, o-ring, oil filter wrench, drain plug, and crush washer. They told me that lately they include the crush washer, o-ring, and filter in their filter kit. I probably didn't need the drain plug, but since I haven't removed mine yet, I wanted to be sure to have a spare on hand. I bought the car from an exotic car dealer in Florida and they took the car to a Porsche dealer in northern Florida and had an inspection done, before I bought the car. The dealer I bought it from stamped the inside of the maintenance manual for minor service and when I called them about it, they said they did not change the oil. Therefore I have no history of any oil change so it probably hasn't been done yet. I never let my cars go as long as the recommended oil change interval, so I will change it now, so I can start the history record. Moralem, I live in the Austin area, so I won't make the drive to Dallas for the oil change. Thanks for the suggestion, though! Skip

Re: Which oil filter to use?

Good call. At least they confessed to having not changed the oil. But then I wonder about if the truly did the minor service, per Porsche guidelines??

I, too, have an extra drain plug. When I change the oil, I change the drain plug. I even thought about an extra filter housing. That way I can swap out the dirty parts for the clean parts. Put the car back together and then clean the other stuff at my leisure - rather than in the middle of the oil change.

Enjoy your car!! Of all the cars I've owned, the Cayman is the best. AFter three years of ownership, it still feels like day 1. No other car has held my interest that long!!
