Front Suspension Popping In Reverse

My 2007 Cayman, with 10,000 miles on it, has just started making a popping sound with the front suspension when I am backing up with the wheel turned all the way to the left. I could find no thread about this issue. Any ideas before I take it in for service?

Thanks.

Re: Front Suspension Popping In Reverse

It has been in a few threads, but probably hard to find as it has been called many different things. Quite common though, it's actually the tire skipping over the pavement due to the hard angle of the wheel and structure of the car. Mine does it on occasion,....nothing to worry about.

....and you will find it is more common when it is cold outside and when the car hasn't driven for a while. Quite normal.

This is GREAT information...part of that stuff you stick away somewhere for when it happens to you.

The FAQ's are also a good place to look for stuff like this: The Cayman Club - FAQ: Indiosyncrasies

Re: Front Suspension Popping In Reverse

I have had the same experience. Tires "skipping".

Re: Front Suspension Popping In Reverse

I had this experience too and just assumed the car had little to no Ackerman, so the one tire was slipping to sync itself with the other. I now see the FAQ Idiosyncrasies mentions something about the pump interacting with the steering rack stop. Either way, I am glad to hear it's normal. This website is awesome.

Re: Front Suspension Popping In Reverse

Same problem on my 2007. A little concern that it started at about 10K miles.
Tire wear?

If yours is a "problem" then it is unrelated to the normal condition explained above. Did this start with cold weather by any chance? There is also the related normal issue of brake discs sticking together overnight if they have been wet.

Will pay closer attention to conditions and confirm.
I think both may be involved.
Thanks for the advise.
