Oil level indicator failure?!?

Hi.

Just yesterday I started my car and after the 6 seconds it takes to measure the oil, a warning light came up and the computer reads, "engine oil level indicator failure". I changed my oil a week ago on my own and now I don't know if I messed something up. Anyone had this problem? Do you know what caused it or if it resolved on its own? I just don't want to be wasting time taking it to the dealer.

By the way, it's a 2007 2.7L Boxster.

Thanks in advanced.

Alex

Re: Oil level indicator failure?!?

Did you replace the crush washer for the drain plug, put a new "O" ring on the filter and torque the drain plug to the proper tightness?

Re: Oil level indicator failure?!?

Yes... Everything was done right and there's no oil leaking from the engine and the car is running fine.

I just hooked up the Durametric software and in the DME section, there was a code....
PO195 "oil temp stuck"

Anyone know what that means?

Hmmmm...... Are you sure you put the oil in the correct place? We had another member accidentally put the oil in the coolant filler, and something similar happened.

Yes. Oil went in its container. I had been using the car for a couple of days previous to the warning and the indicator was working, it was measuring almost full.

The same device that measures the oil level also measures its temperature. If it were me, I'd call my dealership and make an appointment to bring it in. That a serious device that you need working.

I guess I'll have to do that then.

Thanks

Questions for you:
  1. What type and viscosity of oil did you use?
  2. Did you by any chance take the oil pan off? Or did you take anything else off?
  3. Did you stick anything inside the drain hole?
  4. Did you turn the key on before refilling the engine with oil
Something you could try is to disconnect the car's battery for 15 minutes or so, then reconnect it and see if it restores itself.

Re: Oil level indicator failure?!?

Well, if you have Durametric - just reset the error code. See if it comes back. If it does - go to the dealer and get a new sensor.

I used Mobil 1 0W-40 and didn't introduce anything into the pan or turned on the ignition while changing the oil.

I went ahead and deleted the fault codes in the morning but it didn't go away. A while ago I went out and when I started the car to return home it started the countdown and measured the oil. Apparently everything is back to normal. Let see if it stays that way.

Re: Oil level indicator failure?!?

I had the water temperature indicator failure yesterday - red flashing light on the temp dial. Took it straight into the dealer - sensor gone bad although the first thing asked was did I have enough water in the car - I responded -- Porsche are now water cooled -- bugger I didn't know that !!!
