When to replace particle filter?

Year 1 minor maintenance schedule calls for the replacement of the particle filter. My car is always garaged and it only has 3000 miles. I find it hard to believe that the particle filter needs to be replaced.

When do you replace your filter?

Do you use a chacoal or paper filter? Part number would be appreciated.

Re: When to replace particle filter?

I thought the manual said every two years? But then, I have a 2007.

I replace mine every year, immediately following the pollen season. But I think I drive my car more in three months than you have all together.

I buy my parts from Suncoast. I replace my filter with the charcoal filter, because that's what the car came with. The paper filer will save you $32 a year. For me, I find it hard to believe that anyone who could afford a Cayman needs to find a $32 a year savings opportunity. The charcoal filter handles oders as well as pollen. I don't think the risk of my leather absorbing a splattered skunk is worth $32 a year to me.

There is a "how to" in the articles if you are DIY.

Re: When to replace particle filter?

Living in Atlanta, we have an insane pollen season (think yellow snowfall). I replace mine after this clears up nearer to Summer. I always use the charcoal filter. I've had one paper filter, and it was noticably inferior to the 'coal unit.

With only 3000 miles on your car you should just use good judgement. The time frame doesn't matter at all. I'm sure the dealer and/or parts store would like you to believe that it does.

Re: When to replace particle filter?

I live in Virginia & replaced the OEM filter after 10,000 miles. It was ready to be replaced. I drive about 10K per year. Check Vertex Automotive - Porsche Parts at the Best Prices for competitive prices.

Believe it. $32 here, $32 there, the next thing you know you've saved up enough to buy a Cayman. Not all of us get up every morning and worry over which of our supercars we should roll out of the garage that day.

Can someone tell me again why there is a perception that Porsche owners are elitists?

I'm not sure I understand your reply. Is the fact that I find $32 not worth using an inferior aftermarket part to maintain the most expensive car I have ever owned suggest that I am an elitist? A pollen filter isn't even necessary. Your ventilation system will work fine without it and you could save a whole $60.

I'm a salt of the earth kind of guy and anything but an elitist. Though I can certainly understand your suggestion that a lot of littles equals a lot, I tend to believe that trying to save money in the wrong place typically ends up being more expensive than just doing it right the first time. Maintaining a $60,000 car with cheap aftermarket parts is one of those places, in my opinion.

Re: When to replace particle filter?

Unless you live in the Sahara or something, 3000miles sounds way too early to me. I replaced my cabin filter at 2 years/14000 miles and to be honest, the old one was not noticeably dirty (and I live right by NYC). The car is garaged though so it doesn't get any leaf/tree **** (in fact we don't have many trees around here, just concrete ).
