Rear main seal (RMS) leak on Cayman S

Hey all, just wanted to flag up that my car (2007 Cayman S 22k miles) has been diagnosed with having a leaking RMS after a temp sensor was changed by my local Porsche Centre.

My car is out of warranty by a few months, and although I have a full non-Porsche warranty, the service manager said that Porsche would cover the RMS replacement under 100% goodwill (yet to be confirmed).

I know that there have not been many cases of leaking RMS on 987's, but it seems like the problem has not 100% gone from the 996/986 era.

Question - is there anything else that I should get them to do while they're there? The obvious one is clutch, which I'm seriously considering changing at the same time (only have to pay for parts I'm told). Is there anything else that I should get done?

Cheers.

Some people might want to install a lightweight flywheel at the same time since they will have to remove the flywheel to replace the main seal anyway. RMS leaks are pretty rare these days, sorry to hear you have one, but glad to hear Porsche is taking care of you.

How is it that your car (2007 model) is out of warranty? Assuming you purchased it in 2006 you should have at least another year to go. Unless they treat it differently across the pond.

Correct - the warranty in the UK is shorter than in the US.

Wait a sec, I thought Porsche warranties were international. How long are your warranties in the US?

Re: Rear main seal (RMS) leak on Cayman S

I see what appears to be an RMS issue with my 2.7 cayman too, but I'm in denial of sorts at the moment. It is not bad yet, but there is oil residue running backwards from flywheel holes in the trans. As I've said before I'm still in denial, because its got plenty O'warranty left and its not worth the trouble or the stress of an R&R of the engine at this point.

I've read enough to know for fact that the RMS issue will affect most of us sooner or later. The design of the engine will have weak points and this happens to be one.

How to tell a RMS? Oil on the ground?

I hate those 3 letters RMS, i had that on an 01 box S, sold the car cause of that.

What are the costs/parts replaced?
