Rear Brakes

I replaced my front brakes at 27K miles Now I hear a sound from the rear and after jacking up each wheel it appears that I need Rear brakes (no sensor light is on ) is 35K Normal for Rear brake pads?

Re: Rear Brakes

Take good look at them and see. If you replaced the fronts at 27k miles then it's not beyond he realm of possibility that the rears should need it at 35k. The sensors come on at about 2mm of pad left, so if you're close to that, you can save the price of replacing the sensors (although they're pretty cheap in the great scheme of Porschedom) by replacing the pads before the sensors activate... once the sensors are activated, you have to replace them, but even at 2mm, you have about 20% of the pad left. the last 2mm will go away faster relatively speaking, than the previous 8mm. The sound also may mean you have a small rock in there between the rotor and the backing plate. Get in there and look at it with a flashlight, and you should have the answer quickly.

Brad,That's interesting you suggest there might be a rock in there .You are the second person that has told me this ,The other was the service tech at the Porsche Dealer . A wheel bearing was the other thought but he said he doubted that with only 35K on the car.I live in the backwoods country so a rock might be the culprit. will check tomorrow and get back to this post .Thanks much

Replaced Rear Brake pads - There was 60% at least left on the original pads so that was not the answer . Saw some similar posts about a small rock or something between the rotors and the thin metal schield that covers it .Put a closet hanger in there to see if there was a rock or something and nothing came out of . Made a 11 am appt with the dealer . I really hate going to the dealers in WA ,theres always this "it going to need this and this and this when really its just a simple solution . Its all about making some $$ . lets hope they have a solution.

Re: beez

I bought my CS in Jan of 08. I could'nt help myself and so I drove it ALL of the time! I live in a higher elevation and they sand the roads for the snowy weather. Man did I hear a horrendous noise from the rear with a sort of grinding at a slower speed. It was awefull, just awefull! I was sure that it was a small tiny stone lodged somehwere and so I looked for scoring on the discs. Couldn't really see any scoring so I went on just driving it with it getting 98% better each time I drove it. Of course the stones would dislodge and then I'd get another. GGGGRRRIND! Over time, as I was foolishly in love, sort of sick/drunk with driving, I just kept on driving with the sound coming and going. In the end it went away and I put about 17,000 that year!
I just chocked it up to the terrible little stones in the sand, or dirt they spread on the road. Now I drive a Subaru Forester XT for the winter months!
Good luck, and try not to spend too much on a little rock! P.S. I hated the sound it made!!!!!
