» Cayman Spec Information |
CaymanSpec Racing is creating a new “spec” racing class intended to govern club-level competition among first generation Porsche Cayman and Cayman S sports cars. Guiding the development of this class are a focus on driver development and the creation of an environment where driver skill, equipment reliability, and consistency are rewarded through balanced competition and cost control.
Initial eligibility is limited to model year 2006, 2007, and 2008 Porsche 2.7 liter Cayman and 3.4 liter Cayman S USA specification cars that are properly modified for racing (per CaymanSpec regulations). Integration of other Porsche model 987 production cars may be considered if there is interest.
This is currently a grassroots effort, but it is the intent that as the regulations mature the CaymanSpec Racer - or CSR - class will be considered for adoption by multiple club racing organizations. Please visit the Proposed CaymanSpec Racing Regulations discussion, download the current draft rule set and take the opportunity to provide your suggestions on how we can make CaymanSpec a success.
CaymanSpec Racing is an independent amateur effort not supported in any way by Porsche AG, PCNA, PMNA, PCA, or the POC.

Augie,
Different car. I assume the link you saw was to Napleton Porsche and one of their Cayman Interseries Championship cars. Those cars are nearly turn-key racers based on the 2009+ gen2 Cayman S and are built to run a single car series with HSR (Historic Sportscar Racing). I think the 2010 car are a bit more than you suggest.
The thread you see here is reagrding the development of a CaymanSpec Racer based on the 2006 to 2008 Gen 1 chassis and being built for POC club racing. CaymanSpec is a class, not a series, which can be adopted by any racing organization including PCA, POC, etc. For CaymanSpec the owner can convert their existing car (or buy a donor) up the rule maximums. Build costs will depend on how much work the owner does him/herself and on what pace they make the conversion to full spec.
Cheers,

Re: CaymanSpec Racer (CS-R) - Build Photos & Discussion
I think you're right about the series; I don't have the email about it or the link anymore because the cost was too great for me to even think about.
At my soul this car would be me. Too bad I can't consider any major cash outlay at this time or the foreseeable future. With probably 80K in my car already before the economy and my 401K went in the dumper; there no way to do this I matter how much I did myself.

Yes. We are testing the car this week and will be at the POC Cup Race 2/13 & 2/14.
See you there.

Re: CaymanSpec Racer (CS-R) - Build Photos & Discussion
Update: Car is on-track and nearly complete.
Current weight without driver and nearly empty is 2701#, down ~ 400# from stock and ~ 300# from last race - targeting ~2640#. Car still has the Fabspeed exhaust, all bumper internals, and both cooling fans so the target weight is within reach (need to add back cool suit).
First track test went well. Car was mechanically and electrically perfect with no running issues. Wing uprights, etc are prototype and will see some improvement.
Initial suspension set-up was off and we made several alterations (including a rear spring change) at the track. Then the rain came. There is still more to do before next weekend.
Early lap times were already 2 seconds faster than the previous best, with a damp track and pushing car, so the potential for even performance is certainly there.
Here are a few photos from the test day:
More to come.
Cheers,

D your CSR (CaymanSpec Racer) is really coming along. What a slippery slope you found your way to . Wish I could join you next weekend @ Willow Springs. Go get the none believers with the POC concerning our Caymans, I know you will.

1:29.0 for the Pro and 1:30.2 for me at WSIR.
This was the first time out in the car, so times should drop at least two seconds as we get the supension tuned, etc. It was pushing in a number of corners (mechanical, not aero) and the track was a bit damp.

Re: CaymanSpec Racer (CS-R) - Build Photos & Discussion
Nice! What coilovers are you running? And what kind of range of spring rates can they handle without revalving? I ask because you clearly had some great input to be able to make that kind of change on day one, as usually 50 lbs/in here or there is more fine tuning on a GT car. Also, are you running an accusump?

Not running an accusump. Engine internals were modified to improve oiling during the rebuild last year (modified crank, Carrillo rods, 996 deareators, etc.). Also running a deep sump and motorsport VOS.
Current dampers are just my old revalved PSS9s with new hats, etc (so we can run Eibach). Spring rates are not yet decided. We started square and made big changes in ride height and spring rate (+- 200# at a time) to see were we are in the range. Not even close to fine tuning yet.
Most of the lap time improvement probably came from the weight reduction.
Cheers,

Gotcha, the setup process can be infuriating but the challenge can also be a lot of fun!

I think those metal hood pins are weighing you down, swap out for some titanium or carbon fiber! You need a carbon fiber rear hatch with lexan window too...

Cup Car hood pins, so they are already fast.
No CF panels or lexan currently allowed in CaymanSpec. We relented on too many allowed modifications already (e.g., dampers).

Ok then you need to drill random holes throughout the body and frame.

Any plans for front-end aero?

Yes, a torx bit. You take a quick trip to the restroom this weekend and viola, I have new splitters!
We are not yet sure we need front aero, or if we do how much. Need to get the car mechanically right first.

Eek! Better make sure my "Electrostatic Bodypanel Protection Unit™" is fully charged.
I imagine front aero would allow for higher cornering speed under acceleration? The motordrive one looks nice. OEM splitter are easy to get hold of and not too pricey, but I personally am unsure of its effectiveness.
Looking forward to seeing the CSR this weekend. Bill Follmer is instructing me

Rubber shoes!
We will probably take the aero off the car for a bit during testing. Need to get mechanical grip right first, then the areo. A splitter should help as you say, but we do not want to mask poor setup with aero. We can then add aero and raise the entire grip level. There are options - from Motordrive to a basic flat plate - when we get there.
I can take your car out for a few laps if you are interested.
See you there.
Cheers,
