The world runs on direct debits. Few people actually write checks anymore. 96% of employees get direct deposit. In reality, the days of getting a paper pay check ended in the 80s. Whether its a direct debit into your account or out of your account, its all electronic. They need the same information and the same permission from you. The USA would fall apart if direct debits were not used. Its not going back to a paper world.

That may be true if you're dealing with large companies, but a lot of small businesses, particularly in small towns, still function without those things.

The problem with direct debit isn't someone stealing your information; that can happen anyhow. The problem is when you want to change or cancel whatever service that you are paying for by debit. There are endless stories of peoples bank accounts being debited even though they no longer want whatever it was that the debit was established for. Alternatively, I have heard of a few doozies where the utility company makes a mistake and debits way too much. Then you have to fight to get it back. The banks aren't overly sympathetic to the problem either. I don't pay anything automatically except insurance, and I only do that because they insist upon it. I watch the debits like a hawk.

Exactly. You can be victimized by a legit company's incompetence as well as fraudsters. I put all these charges on a no-annual-fee, cash-back credit card. Less risk, more rewards, but still a hassle in a data breach.

Re: Cars nowadays are too heavy

Yes, its true we have all heard about the guy who got a $18,000 electric bill because the utility company made a mistake, or the $10,000 iTunes bill because someone's kid bought a lot of apps. In reality, they are rare but "sell newspapers" or did so before Fake News. Today, fake news probably sells more papers (or lets people watch their favorite echo chamber) so no need for these perennial favorites. Human interest stories don't sell as well as blood or scandals.

Now the second point is more an issue. Getting something cancelled is more a problem but in the end, its one of life's hassles. I found this true, if I remember right, with sat radio. Even no longer owning the car, they wanted to bill me.

Today I made the mistake of answering the phone. I was expecting a phone call and didn't know the number it was coming from so caller ID was useless.

First one comes through, I answer, and someone with a foreign accent asks to speak with the homeowner. So far, that could be the person. Then he goes into a speech about buying something. This is why I don't answer the phone.

The second caller ID has the name of a business I know and do business with but was NOT expecting the call. So I let it go through and ... Someone is selling something. I look up the number and it appears someone is using the same caller id of a legitimate business.

I've grown to hate the phone.
