Re: 2009 Stock Markets
The sentiment seems to be still poor. While 52% seems to suggest at the least the worst is over while 48% believe it is going to get worse.

Are you saying if the wrong team loses then the government will have to do another bail out and therefore own a football team ?

Re: 2009 Stock Markets
I think it will go up or down, depending on whether there are more buyers or more sellers...that's the kind of answer a finance degree will get you!
By the way, I voted up because I have faith.

Re: 2009 Stock Markets
Current observation: 45% believe the markets will go further down in 2009, while 55% believe we have hit bottom, we will either move sideways or somewhat up.

Re: 2009 Stock Markets
And what is 'up', and what is 'significantly up'?
I voted > 20%, which sounds significant.

Re: 2009 Stock Markets
It does not matter what we think will happen this year. For the next five to ten years, there is no easy money to be made by investing in the stock market. Trading is another story. It will take at least 15 years for the Dow to get back to 15000. For the next five years, there are no good scenarios. Either the economy goes into deflation or the economy goes into hyper inflation. If deflation wins, Dow 4000 is a possibility. If hyperinflation wins, interest rates will go up significantly and valuation multiples will decrease significantly. That will cause the Dow to stay low for a long time. Mass investors will invest mostly in GIC's. Once an investor gets out of the stock market, he does not return for a long while. The last 20 years have been so unreal, so out of mean. We have to change our reference points. Think more like the 30's and 40's. It took 25 years for the Dow to get back to pre-1929 highs. I believe this is what we are looking at. Buy a Porsche instead of investing.

Re: 2009 Stock Markets
Re: 'A Short History of Financial Euphoria' by John Kenneth Galbraith
He makes a convincing argument that the boom/bust nature of the markets is due to 1) the innate speculative nature of man, and 2) the fact that as time elapses and the markets recover (and new generations of investors enter the markets) investors 'forget' the lessons of the past and new found ways to excessively leverage investments becomes the norm again.
This cycle has repeated itself throughout history, and, convincingly, will repeat itself into the future.
(Personnally I think that as money is pumped into the economy, and bad news lessens, we will see some strong rebounds in the markets. But history will repeat...)

Re: 2009 Stock Markets
Since January the markets went thru significant swings. It would be interesting the get the pulse of our community once again to see the current sentiments.
