Great Horned Owl
Completely unrelated to anything about Porsche but I was outside a few minutes ago and got to see a very large Horned Owl in my aspen tree and then see him find a rabbit for dinner. Wow. He must have been two foot tall. But very camera shy.

About 15 years ago when the house was new, the cat would sit in the window at night. A very large white owl would sit in the tree outside and just go crazy. About a week later my husband went to the gate and he had tipped a wing on the power line and was dead. The owl was in the freezer for about a week before we could get him to Fish and Game. He is now stuffed and on display. Beautiful bird.

Re: Great Horned Owl
Owl story #1: I used to have one of those fake, bobble-head owls on top of our back deck to keep the birds away from the deck. One day, shortly after I put it up I saw a large white owl land on our neighbor's roof, clearly attracted by the fake owl on mine. He (I assume) actually stayed there quite a while trying to decide whether to make a move on mine.
Owl story #2: When my wife got her 2nd Chihuaha puppy a couple of years ago, she was watching it romp around in the back yard one day, when she sensed something fly overhead into the woods behind our house. She looked up in one of the trees and saw a very large owl eyeing the puppy. Of course, she rescued the dog before the owl could collect its lunch, but she never let the puppy out in the back again unless she was with it.

Re: Great Horned Owl
My owl story....
When I first got married my wife and I lived in a 3rd floor appartment overlooking a set of railroad tracks. Along the track was a line of old wooden telephone poles with lots of fields all around. Just about every night I would hear the loudest of "hoots" and rush out onto the balcony to see where it was coming from, but never saw anything as it was usually pitch black. Then one night I hear the hoots and rush out to take a look. Just then a slow moving train with a very bright headlight starts rounding the uphill curve towards our appartment. The light illuminated a huge object on the telephone pole about 50 feet away. As the train got closer the object took flight and flew right over the balcony. I then easily identified it as a great horned owl about two feet in length and about a 5'wingspan,.....magnificent bird,....and you would not believe how loud they are. The first time I heard it, even through windows and walls, I sat straight up in bed, eyes wide open,.....it's call is that loud and deep. Awesome!

Re: Great Horned Owl
Great animals and great stories. I can almost feel like I was there when I read them. My owl story is with a snow owl:
About 6-7 years ago my youngest daughter and I were snowmobiling through the wide open countryside of northern Alberta. As we approached a clump of trees in the corner of one field a snow owl launched from one of the trees and happens to head in a direction that has no fence lines or obstructions for about 3 miles (one road, I think). Anyway, I gently head the sled in the direction of the owl, and being careful to not accelerate too hard to minimize noise, we eventually settle out under the owl at about 25-30 mph. We stay under the owl, who was flying perhaps 50' up for the 2-3 miles and gaze up at him as we travel. Funny thing was that he was just as interested in us, but didn't appear frightened, as he would gaze down at us regularly - probably wondering when this buzzing animal was going to stop following him! Absolutely gorgeous!
Not sure if they are as big as the great horned owls but they are still very sizable. Once saw a burrowing owl from about 10 feet away and they are definitely NOT the size of a great horned! lol
