Life not going as well as you thought?

I know there are a million threads about the 911 vs Cayman out there...and a million about smart axxed lil comments from people, but I am stepping on my petty little soap box.

IN another unnamed forum, lets just say it isnt about cars, there was a casual conversation about the joy of driving and seeking out twisties and a long time member of that forum just OUT OF THE BLUE says to me....and I quote...

"So why couldn't you afford a 911? Life not going as well as you'd hoped?"

WTF?

There was no banter, debate or otherwise ugliness to the entire thread prior to this comment.

The above, was his entire comment ...he added nothing more to the thread or original topic.

Some people say I have a way with words. One of my friends said I have the ability to wipe someones **** with my written words. In fact he calls is "Paper wiping em'".

So I paper wiped the guy who said that to me.

I am a little worked up at the audacity of some people. I should not have let it get to me....but I did. I guess because I count my blessings at how well life is going for me right now...in spite of how unlucky, unfortunate and other downward spiraling directions other peoples lives seem to be taking. I am very lucky despite how much I would like to think it was because I have made smart decisions. Others have too and not encountered the same good fortune.

I swear if he had said that to me in person, I would have either been jaw dropping shocked or hauled off and smacked him. Probably a good thing I am behind a keyboard.

(stepping down)

Let me pass on a bit of experience that my 65 years have thought me. Listen to the things that you can use and that makes you better. Ignore the stuff that doesn't. You will live longer and happier.

I know it is true. But following it 100% of the time is much more difficult.

My dad told me this. "there are more horses asses than there horses". In saloons, board rooms, presidential palaces in the
Middle East and Internet forums that thought as always set my expectations and made it easier to deal with fools.

Couldn't agree more.

Not worth wasting your breath on somebody without good sense, too. Also reminds me of an old saying:

"You can lead a ***** (lady of ill repute) to culture, but you can't make her think."

There is much more satisfaction to remaing silent to comments like these. If someone says that to my face, I have learned to look them straight in the eye, smile and walk away.

Re: Life not going as well as you thought?

Let me use the same quote that I have replied in other posts.
Definition of Ignorance: The condition of being uneducated, unaware, or uninformed.

Re: Life not going as well as you thought?

The guy made a very ignorant comment about Porsches in general and about you in particular. Unfortunately life is full of people who combine arrogance w/ ignorance, the result of which is never good. It's helpful to vent here, but in the last analysis people like this aren't going to change and don't deserve our time or emotion. Be glad it's only the internet and not a guy you work with!

Re: Life not going as well as you thought?

Santa Fe's right; no response would have been the best response. "You couldn't afford a 911?" has to be the oldest taunt in the book, and you fell for it. His aim was to get to you, and you let him know that it did. Try not to give such rude people the satisfaction.

Re: Life not going as well as you thought?

I remember hearing that ......maybe Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear???

Someone in the media, used that exact quote jokingly... and then turned it around and talked about how good the new Cayman was.

From the guy who gave us "Coxster"
Now that was funny, but really mean... still funny though

I would have replied,
"I wouldn't drive a 911 if it was free, the engine is in the wrong place."

Re: Life not going as well as you thought?

The taunt goes back to 912 owners in the mid-'60s; then on to owners of the 914, 924, 944, 968, on up to the Boxster and Cayman. It's even used in a joking manner, at least among friends. I last heard it said in jest to a new GT-3 owner, and it drew a big laugh.

Re: Life not going as well as you thought?

You were trolled, buddy. Plain and simple. Have a beverage of your choice and relax. I could have afforded to buy a 911 but they ended up making the Cayman and I didn't have to!

Good to get it off your chest though rather than dwell on it.

Re: Life not going as well as you thought?

I know the quote is out of context so it's hard to judge what the person's intention was with that comment. Personally I wouldn't have gotten so worked up because I don't think it's that insulting.

If life was going as well as I'd hoped I'd be driving a GT 2! And if i it works as well as I hope soon I'll have a GT 2, GT and a CS Clubsport!

Fat chance of that happening

The point is I think that myself being Cayman driver may be a bit quick on the trigger because of an inferiority complex. Always in big brother's shadow.

We should relax a little and answer the silly questions that the uninformed ask so that they can learn from us. Only then will the taunt's stop.

In that situation I'd like to answer:"Life is working out pretty much as I'd hoped but the 911 is a little over-priced and the engine is in the wrong place, the Cayman was exactly the kind of car I was looking for and the bonus was that it was a hell of a lot cheaper. It's by far the best sports car "package" on the market"

Of course my answer in the heat of the moment would probably have been something that I can't write on this forum!

You could always have posted a link to one of 'best sports car in the world' reviews too.

Kevin
You should have replied: "I saw this post on the web site. "So why couldn't you afford a 911? Life not going as well as you'd hoped?" It's obviously from some crackpot that hacked your account".

Re: Life not going as well as you thought?

I had to practice Sante Fe's advice once because what you describe pretty much happened to me in person. At a gas station a 911 driver, admiring my car, asked me if someday I planned to "trade up to a 911?" It didn't bother me THAT much. I know his engine is in the wrong place, and he knows his engine is in the wrong place, and we both know that we both know.

There's nothing better to me than blowing all those 911's away at the track.
That's the way to get even.
