It was pretty good size, 8" maybe with pretty good sized claws. The weird thing is that we are at least a 1/4 mile from the closest river/stream and located in the middle of a subdivision. It rained pretty hard last night, but I don't think hard enough to pick this guy up and drop him in our yard.
We brought him in for some photos and fun time with the kids then we got in the car and drove to the nearest park and let him go right by a stream. Oh and the kids named him "Felix"

Re: Look what walked by today!
They actually make a cool temporary pet. I had one in an aquarium as a kid (yes, we were poor) and fed it small fish. Watching them catch a fish as it swims by is amazing. then they simply eat it like an ear of corn.
Gator Bite-
K-Man put a gold hubcap from a 72 Cadillac next to the beast in the picture so you can tell it's relative size. Tail to claw tip, I'd estimate 6 feet in length and 50-75 pounds.

When I was a kid we would lift rocks in the river and look for crayfish. One time I captured some in a jar and brought them home. They were babies, about half an inch in length. I added them to our fresh water aquarium. I think we added 6 or 7 in total. Interestingly, the damn fish ate all but two of them. The 'Jack Dempsey's' were the once that would hunt and eat them. The remaining two were clever. They hid under the bottom decorations, rocks, etc... They would come out at night and scavenge the bottom for food. They lived a long time and got much bigger. One of them got to about 3 inches in length. Suddenly the tables were turned. The Dempsey's suddenly had all sorts of wounds and pieces missing from their fins. Those damn two crayfish would sit there like rocks, claws opened, just waiting for an unsuspecting fish to swim by, them 'Slam' the would try to grab onto them. I saw a them get lifted away by the escaping Dempsey a few times.
The cool part was watching them crawl out of their shells as they grew. They would shed their shell and walk out of the back side. First time it happened I thought they had babies because they somehow multiplied. Further examination showed that we were looking at empty shells. The Dempsey's would even eat the shells. Duh....
OK, sorry, got going again there....

That was very kind of you. An excellent lesson to teach your kids. Too many people are cruel to animals, it just makes me sick.

Usually they only look that red after they've met the Zatarain's.

Well hopefully you won't see a "Lost Red Lobster" flyer in your neighborhood.

If you lived a bit farther south, I would have guessed that you or a neighbor had a bunch of these in your yard. Once the weather warms up a bit, they take off looking for new homes. They can live up to six months out of the water provided the humidity is high.

When I was 12 I had one in a tank with a warmouth perch I caught.
They were about the same length. Maybe 6 inches or so. For months they were locked in an epic battle. The perch would hover over the crayfish. Tail toward the top of the tank. Circling the crayfish below. Constantly testing for a way to grab the crayfish by the tail. The crayfish would wave it's claws above in a menacing way, constantly turning to keep from turning it's back on the fish. They would pause during feeding time. I would drop in feeder fish and when the perch had it's fill the crayfish would grab a few. Finally, the crayfish molted and the perch ate it before it's newly enlarged exoskeleton could harden.

Re: Look what walked by today!
Funny you should mention that. A guy that I know who relocated from Louisiana to Arkansas (part near Memphis). The property had a rice farm and he decided to raise crawfish in it. He had the best crawfish boil that I've had in a long time.
Speaking of crawfish as pets ... Anytime we had a boil in N.O. the dogs would play around with the extra crawfish crawling around. It was always funny to see one latch on to a nose when the small dogs got too close.

Re: Look what walked by today!
Cool story.
My guess is a bird found him near a swollen stream, air lifted him a bit, and then either dropped him or was "persuaded" to let go!
