Re: Star Trek
Freaking great movie. I saw it last night at an IMax theater. As a long time fan, I found it very enjoyable.

In regard to the mining ship, I guess we can assume that because it comes from a different time, it's more advanced.

As mentioned, they covered this pretty well.

What ever happened to the bug they put in Capt Pike to make him talk? Was it the same bug that Khan put in Chekov's ear?
|
I think it was a different bug. What I found interesting is that they had Pike in a wheel chair at the end, just like his re-appearance in the original.
I have to say, I am very impressed at how they put so many throw backs in there for us fans. Most of them will go right over the heads of new viewers, but for me, every one of them was cool.
My personal favorite, and something I didn't know, was why Jim calls McCoy Bones. I also never new Kirk's middle name.
In my opinion, this was the best Star Trek movie since the Wrath of Kahn. I think that one will hold onto it's place at the top, but I have to say that this one absolutely smoked every Trek movie since.
I really hope they do more with these characters. I'll be the first in line to the next movie, and I don't go to the movies very often.

Re: Star Trek
I did not know the Bones story either, but I knew Kirk's middle name, there is actually a controversy over that among die hard Trek fans. Evidently in one of the very early tv episodes a grave is shown for James Kirk and the headstone has either a different middle name or different middle initial, I don't remember which. Time to dig out the old TV episodes and review I guess...

I am Not a Star Trek Fan - So Didn't see the Movie Either...
As For 'Bones'
I Believe that this Name - Stems (My Father was a 'Naval Historian', So I Had Better Know This..........) from the Earliest times, when a Surgeon was Put aboard a 'Man of War' (BattleShip - in Modern Parlance) in the Mid 1700's (Just before the time when You 'Rebellious Colonials' - Started Being Ungrateful for the 'Benefits' of British Rule...)
The Physician/Surgeon's Role, on a 'Man of War' was Primarily to Preserve Morale, by Preserving Life, Wherever Possible in those Primitive Times.....
The Awful Injuries Inflicted by Cannon and the Flying Splinters (Huge Chunks of Wood....) Meant Most Injured, Bled to Death...............
The Surgeon's Most Common Task, to Preserve Life - Was Amputation........ Fast and Quick - The Skill to Cut, Peel Back the Skin, Saw the Limb Off, Suture and Seal the Stump with Hot Pitch (Also Cauterised the Wound to Stop Infection) Saved Many Lives............ All Done in Under a Minute.............. Also with No Anesthetic, gave rise to 'Bite the Bullet' To Stop Breaking our Teeth..... But on Naval Ships this would be a Thick Leather Strap....
The Naval Surgeon - Could Have Been Called a 'Butcher'.......... Politeness Dictated a more 'Kindly' Designation..... 'SAW BONES' Was Shortened to 'Bones'.... Which Has been the Naval Surgeon's 'NickName' Since those Times.......
As For 'Surgeon' - In Britain it is an Insult, to Call a Surgeon 'Dr. Xxxxxxxx'
A Surgeon is Always Referred to as 'Mr. Xxxxxx' - Surprising but True...............!
The Original Surgeons were Not Physicians - Not Fully Medically Trained - But Good With Their Hands........
Surgeons Nowadays Have to Complete Regular Medical/Physician Training and then the 'Extra' Surgical Training............
To This Day - if a Doctor Wants to Offer to Work on My Car.......... They Can Fill up the Oil Etc.....
A Surgeon However - Can Work On My Car - any Day of the Week..........
What Was the Star Trek - Reason for 'Bones'............?

Re: Star Trek
The tombstone is in the episode "Where No Man has Gone Before". It has the old style uniforms and guest stars Gary Lockwood (2001 Space Odyssey) and Sally Kellerman (MASH). It's also the only episode shown on TV that did not have Kirk's narration with the opening theme (Space the final frontier......). Spock's eyebrows are thicker like the original pilot. No McCoy either. It was the second pilot. TMI???

I believe that episode was filmed before Shatner signed on to play Kirk.

Re: Star Trek
I thought the movie was good and I particularly like how the story line handles a divergent future. Nicely done!
I agree with other posters that the "new" Kirk lacks something but I like the new McCoy. I'll be looking forward to the next one and hope they recognize the gold mine they have in their hands. If they treat it well, they will raise a whole new generation of "trekkies."

Re: Star Trek
Haven't seen it yet but from reading through here did they throw another one out for us to get by changing Uhura to Ahura? Or is this just a mumble finger?

Not true. Kirk was in there. It was the second pilot. After the original pilot called the Menagerie, never shown but later turned into the only 2 part episode called the cage, featuring Jeffery Hunter.

In the second special episode (the first to feature William Shatner) known as Where No Man Has Gone Before, a grave is made and on the tombstone it clearly says James R Kirk, an error.
Where No Man Has Gone Before - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Another bit of trivia. Only one actor was featured in every series of Star Trek (TV series) including the pilots, Star Trek, ST Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, ST Voyager, Star Trek Enterprise (2 epidodes), most of the movies, and even the new movie. Majel Barrett, who in the new movie, provides the computer voice.

A mumble finger. Uhura. Watch the movie to find out her first name...
I remember watching the original series in B/W when I was kid. I always tried to go over to my friend's house since they had a color TV to watch. But even in B/W it was fun. Exciting. Funny. Full of hope that the future would be better. Interesting ideas, some of which I noticed as a kid, others as an adult.
The last few years of TV and movies were just dark and morbid. The fun was leached out. The hope bleed away. They didn't feel like Star Trek. Warp drive destroys space/time??? Dark hallways on ships? No strange new worlds, just the same old enemies. What the h*** were they thinking? Or more properly what was Berman thinking. Apparently he thought jumping the shark was a good thing...
The new movie has plot holes you can drive a truck through. A REALLY big truck. And it was a blast. They found the fun again. It had excitement. It has hope, even after a terrible disaster (worst in Federation history). It had humor, most of which worked. The most fun I've had a Star Trek movie in years. I didn't care at all about the plot holes. I left with a smile.
I'm looking forward to the sequel. Many sequels, assuming they keep the fun and excitement in the movies.
Every one should rejoice that Rick Berman is gone.

Planning for the second viewing this weekend.

Re: Star Trek
This was a fun movie. I really enjoyed it. By the way, it's available in IMAX format, just in case you need to watch it again.

I agree. The original series was always done with "tongue in cheek" which made it lots of fun. The new ones have gotten too serious and macabre at times.
