The price of paradise
most of us living in hawaii accept (although we don't like it) the high cost of living. case in point...i joined the GB for the das schild lid protector. the deal was 30% off plus 1/2 off s&h for US. other US purchasers paid $9.43 for s&h. because i'm in hawaii, i was charged $31.43 for s&h.
in this case, the price of paradise is $22.

Re: The price of paradise
And very few roads and almost nowhere to drive a really great car without traffic. From a driving perspective, don't you get bored?

Don't you know that waiting for a redlight is fun in a Porsche!

808croc,
Yeah but you get to drive to North Shore and grab some Giovanni's garlic shrimp for lunch! That beats any beach here in Nor Cal. Last time I was stuck in Hawaii for work I did the drive to North Shore in a rental Pontiac Vibe....no fun factor there!

Last time I was in Maui (2001), I got to do it in a Camaro convertible, and took the road to Hana. All time great drive, but too many rented Pontiac Vibes, Azteks, Sunfires and minivans......

Re: The price of paradise
I've grown accustomed to high shipping costs. I don't like it, but I'm used to it. After all, the cost of living is a little higher here, especially fuel unfortunately.. and food.
And the fact that it's an island really does kill some of the enjoyment of owning a Porsche. As much as I love going out and driving through Waikiki and jumping on the highway, I feel like I'm getting cabin fever sometimes. The roads are pretty bad too, but - surprisingly - I found out that they're not the worst in the US.
Don't get me wrong - Hawaii is a pretty nice place to live.. decent people for the most part and it's very relaxed, for better and for worse (for me, it's usually for worse). However, my perspective is a little different, having moved here from Japan. I would say good things about the weather but it's been a pain lately, teasing with the sun and then raining all over my freshly detailed car. But sometimes I feel like moving somewhere else like Seattle and the Midwest. Or Vancouver. But I know I would miss it here; I know there are far worse places to live and consider myself fortunate to have a fast car and a good place to live.
By and far, it's the people - friends, family and significant other - that make Hawaii worthwhile. It's hard to get by without any of those, though for the latter I swear this island has Noah's Ark syndrome where everyone was already paired off with someone as soon as they got off the plane.
Oh, and the last time I went to Giovanni's on the North Shore (last month), there was a lot of traffic and that killed it a bit.
..sigh. Too many mini-vans, beaters, giant trucks, ricers and people that just don't give a [censored] on this island.
