Feet to the Pedals
While most of you are interested in putting the pedal to the metal, this weekend I will be putting my foot to the pedal in the Pittsburgh MS Bike Tour. Its a 150 mile charity ride benefitting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
As an Assistant District Attorney I ride on Team Law & Order with a number of police officers and their families. Ordinarily I raise somewhere in the neighborhood of $20,000/year for the MS Society. Unfortunately, this year, early in my fundraising effort, four Pittsburgh police officers were shot, three of them died. As you might imagine, all fundraising in the courthouse turned to helping the families of the murdered officers and I stopped raising money for two months.
Now, 3 days before the ride I turn to my fellow Porsche owners, particularly Cayman owners, to help me make up for lost time. So I'm asking you to dig deep, give up a couple of beers for the weekend, and kick in $10 or $20 each to sponsor me. A month from now you won't even notice its gone. It's tax deductible in the US if you itemize and, you'll help me justify having the only Ruby Red Cayman S in western Pennsylvania to sport a bike rack on the roof. Just use the link to my pledge page and click on "Donate to Larry" to sponsor me.

Re: Feet to the Pedals
Come on folks 78 views and not one sponsor? Small amounts from a bunch of you would mean alot to the National MS Society.

Art, now all I need is 99 more my Porshce brothers and sisters to help me out. You'd be amazed at how fast it can add up to a substantial sum. I'm gonna eat a lot of bananas this weekend, hopefully they won't be as active as that one. lol
I wish I could find time to put in 2500 miles a year on my bike. If I get in 500-1000 I consider it a good year and that includes the 150 miles I will pedal this weekend. Its a wonder I manage to do the MS ride without getting off and walking given how little I can train. But my sponsors pay for me to ride (and suffer) and I give them their money's worth. The only way I am gonna walk or ride in a wagon is if they cart me away in an ambulance.
My two wheel ride is a Cannondale CAD4 that I built in spring 2001. Because I am not getting any younger I put a road triple on the front and a mountain 9speed cluster on the back giving me a very wide range. The mountain derailuer works just fine with the STI shifters.

It helps to be retired with lots of friends who also ride. The season here is April thru October.

Re: Foot to the Pedals
I could never understand a u riding a bike when he had a bitchin car to drive instead... but I've seen it a lot. And I half understand it (I mean beside the personal benevolent thing). I guess I need to go out and ride a bike.
You got my donation!

Thanks Chas. You've just got to try it, the scenery goes by a lot slower on the bike, well at least it does for me, so you get to see more detail. On the other hand, when I put my bike on top of the Cayman S, I do get to the start line faster than anyone else.
Here are some pics from the ride: Lunch on Saturday, I'm on the left:

Down hill on a bike at 40 mph is just as exciting as driving the Cayman.

Couple of years ago I rode a tandem bike with a buddy of mine. We were doing 59 mph. That will have you picking the bugs out of your teeth.

Re: Foot to the Pedals
I hate bicycles. Way to much effort. Much easier for me to just give you money and let you ride it!

Drayton and Michael, thanks so much for your generous contributions.

Drayton, its funny you should say that. When I am raising money for the ride face to face I often approach people and ask them to do a 150 mile charity bike ride with me. Much like you they laugh and decline, pretty much for the same reason. I move in for the kill and tell them that in that case they'll just have to sponsor me...I pedal, you pay. Most of them do.
So how about it folks, sponsor me now or you're gonna have to do the ride with me next year.

30 Minutes to top $17,000
Thanks to all of you generous souls who have already sponsored me. The deadline for fundraising is in 30 minutes. I need to raise another $105 by 11:59 Eastern time to clear $17,000. If I can get 11 of you to donate just $10 each I'll make it. How about it guys?
I know the web site says I ahve raised far less, but I turned in more than $13,000 in checks and cash this afternoon and it takes a while to show up on the web site.
