Me too. Right now.

Email search. Finally.

Cut and Paste. MMS pictures. Etc.

I'm going to hold off on the new phone as long as I can.

Re: iPhone 3.0 Software Update is available

So the big question is, does it make the older iPhone run any faster? The 3GS is advertised as being twice as fast as the 3G phone but is that because of hardware, software or both? If you add the new iphone 3.0 to an existing 3G iphone does it get any faster? Does the new software add a hard keyboard?

You can turn the phone sideways for a full keyboard that you can actually type with. Have you tried to attach a Bluetooth hard keyboard? The 3G speed isn't improved, you'll still have to find WiFi access for good speed.

Re: iPhone 3.0 Software Update is available

I'm not talking about 3G speed, I am talking about how fast the phone works for apps, etc. that's what the Apple claim is improved on the 3GS, the wireless speeds are still the same. As for attaching a bluetooth keyboard, egads might as well carry a laptop at that point...

Has anyone try using the new bluetooth feature to connect to the audio system? As far as I understand, you still need a bluetooth receiver, such as iO Play.

Re: iPhone 3.0 Software Update is available

I have a first gen iPhone (archaic, I know) and I'd say it's a bit faster on the one game I play on the phone. The game was the only thing which would cause minor slowdowns, not any longer. Completely anecdotal and in no way meant to be a broad answer to the question.

Re: iPhone 3.0 Software Update is available

the 3gs has improved hardware over the 3g (i believe ~200MHz faster proc, increased onboard mem, not sure about power consumption) so the speed improvement is likely mostly due to the hardware. im sure they made some software optimizations but the main benefits of 3.0 are added functionality (that should have been there from the beginning).

Ken I've been using the developers beta versions of 3.0 for months, beta's 1 thru 5 and the pre-release version. This up-grade is intended to implement some new features, not to include the new 3G S speed. That is an hardware issue .

Re: iPhone 3.0 Software Update is available

I too have the first gen Iphone (stupid, stupid) anyway the new 3.0 is nice. I like the cut/paste option with a shake to undo and the voice recorder.

Oh and I have a reservation to pick up my 3GS on Friday. Guess the only thing I learned is to buy the apple service plan this time around.

Re: iPhone 3.0 Software Update is available

AAARRGHH!!!

I tried to upgrade my software this morning and it failed to install (of course it wiped out the previous software, so nothing works on it now); after spending 2 solid hours on the phone with tech support (1st and 2nd tier) they still can't help me . . .

Anyone need an expensive, 16GB paperweight? Not happy . . .

You should absolutely be able to restore it.

First, try this:

Plug the iPhone into your computer.
Hold onto both the Home button, and the power button… and keep holding on. After it reboots, keep holding on and let it reboot again. Still do not let go, it will take upto another 15 seconds.

If this does nothing... repeat above steps, once you see the apple logo the first time, let go the power button and hold only the home button for 15 seconds.

The next thing you will see is the restore screen. You’ll see the iTunes logo, and a little cable. At that point, you’ll be told iTunes has found an iphone in restore mode and it will let you select a backup.

Restore the last full backup that you have.

---

If that doesn't work, google restore bricked iphone and you will see some more advanced and intensive methods. Definitely should not be a total loss.

Good luck.

Suneet gave you a hard reset. If that fails try this

DFU Mode

Re: iPhone 3.0 Software Update is available

I appreciate the suggestions, but I have tried just about every combination of hard resets, DFU mode, etc. on 3 different computers, including 2 new, clean iTunes installations, without any success.

The software recovery gets about half way thru the process of loading the new software and then aborts ("unknown error 14") at the same stage every time. I have sent my Update and iTunes diagnostic logs to Apple tech support, so they can forward it to their engineers, to see if they can figure out what the problem is. I have a feeling I may have to send it in to get it fixed.

UPDATE (Later that night): Well after the umpteenth try, using DFU mode on a different computer with another new iTunes profile, I finally got it to work.

Re: iPhone 3.0 Software Update is available

By the way, 3.0 is also available for the iPod Touch. I paid my $9.95 and downloaded it. So far I haven't noticed much of a difference.

I also downloaded the Sirius XM app as well, which came out today and is free. Works well and has a nice interface, but for some reason Sirius decided to leave out the Howard Stern channels...not very smart.

Re: iPhone 3.0 Software Update is available

OK Folks,

I have a 3g and am excited to update to the new software. However, I am concerned that it will not work with the PCM in my 09 C4S. Currently, everything works perfectly. Has anyone out there tested this yet.

I hate to be the tester.

Thanks

There's no reason why it shouldn't work. Why exactly are you concerned that the PCM is somehow incompatible?
