ruptured achilles - can't drive Cayman for some time

I hope everyone is doing well. Unfortunately, I ruptured my (left, ie "clutch") Achilles tendon playing basketball 2 weeks ago and will not be able to drive my Cayman S for who knows how long. It could be 10+ weeks. I'm really bummed. I'm going to push myself in rehab to get back as soon as possible...I'm hoping to be able to drive it before the summer's over.

I did a search on PlanetPorsche for "achilles" that came back empty. If anyone has any experiences with coming back from an injury like this and how long it took them to get back to driving manual transmissions, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks.

Bad news indeed. The temptation will be to push too hard in rehab and re-injure yourself. Like poison ivy this too will pass..best of luck. I need a pin put in my left big toe but since it is elective I've chosen to deal with the pain in the toe rather than the pain of the loss of Cayman driving.

Re: ruptured achilles - can't drive Cayman for some time

I have gone through Achilles tendinitis (a running injury) a number of times. It's not as severe as a ruptured Achilles, but at its worst, it was very painful to walk on. This is an injury to take seriously.

The biggest mistake you can make is trying to rush back too soon to doing what you did before. I learned this lesson too late and it's one of the reasons I was forced to quit running. Achilles injuries are generally slow to heal. If it hurts when you push it and it isn't getting better, you are doing something wrong. I found lots of ice to be helpful for reducing the inflammation. Give it time. It will get better.

Re: ruptured achilles - can't drive Cayman for some time

I'm fine, but my wife just returned from the hospital after breaking her hip (we were riding our road bikes when a pedestrian stepped in front of her, they collided and my wife fell landing directly on her hip--ouch!). That means our two summer trips in the CS are off the calendar. Frankly, her injury has taken away a little of the fun of owning the CS since we can't enjoy it together again until late September.
I hope you heal up quickly--follow your doctors advice in order that it heals completely.

That is too bad to hear, hope you feel better soon.

this one reason you should ALWAYS read the fineprint on any contract you sign. it clearly stated ABSOLUTELY NO SPORTS outside of driving the CS .... Porsche may even fine you for risking your casual sports car driver carrer with such sillynes as Basketball. What if ... the injury would have been to your shifting hand and more serious, it may have you relegated to a life long of comfy automatic driving ... just reckless behavior IMHO on your part.

Re: ruptured achilles - can't drive Cayman for some time

Recovering from this injury will take time, I am not an MD but two of my neighbors just had this surgery a few months back. Both have had a minimum of 3 months recovery. The older guy in his mid to late 40s took longer but he really was messed up the younger guy late 30s early 40s recovered a lot sooner on avg. they took three months at a minimum before they go out of the boot. Don't rush yourself and take rehab seriously. Sorry for your mishap. It can happen to anyone.

Re: ruptured achilles - can't drive Cayman for some time

Years ago my wife broke her left leg skiing. She was in a plaster cast from her ankle to her hip. Our only cars were straight drives. She figured out how to push in the clutch with her leg in a cast. If she had to make a sudden stop she just stalled the car. It's amazing what we do when we are young and dumb but it seemed like a good idea at the time. I wouldn't do that with a Porsche.

Get well soon.
