    Hydrogen in tires-why?

MY sticker on my 911 says the tires were filled with Hydrogen-what are the benefits and can I add regular air to the tire on top on the Hydrogen?

    Re: Hydrogen in tires-why?

Are you sure it is Hydrogen (which is very explosive by the way - think the Hindenburg) and not Nitrogen?

Nitrogen fills is the current fad - the main benefit being that there is theoretically little or no moisture in tank-filled nitrogen, compared to compressed air.

I don't think there is any problem adding standard compressed air to nitrogen or hydrogen (but I still find it hard to believe that you would have hydrogen).

    Re: Hydrogen in tires-why?

A couple of reasons. First, dry compressed nitrogen from a tank has much less humidity than air, so you will have more consistent tire pressures over a wide temperature range, although the difference will most likely not be noticeable.

Second, nitrogen diffuses through a membrane slower than other gas molecules like oxygen or carbon dioxide, which means you won't have to fill your tires as frequently. Again, I highly doubt you will notice any difference. Air is already 78% nitrogen.

    And third, nitrogen is non-flammable.

It wouldn't hurt to get your tires filled with nitrogen, but I wouldn't pay for it. There are places (like Costco) that will fill your tires with nitrogen for free.

    +1

The main benefit to a nitrogen fill is in a spare tire, it prevents the tire from de-grading over a period of 5 or more years. Few of us keep our primary tires that long.

Shameful that its quickly being sold as snake-oil to unsuspecting people who take their cars in for service. I watched as (4) people were 'sold' on it at $ 10 per tire at a local Toyota dealer when I had my Tacoma in for warranty work and was waiting in the service lane.

$10 per tire?? Holy cow, I'm in the wrong business!

I should start marketing "premium automotive grade nitrogen" and offer fills for $20/tire...

    Tom Tucker here,

What is Porsche not telling their customers about 911 tires? We'll let you know, plus traffic and weather.

    Air is non-flammable.

Contrary to belief, oxygen is non-flammable. Hydro-carbon compounds (like gasoline), or hydrogen, are flammable in the presence of oxygen. Basic science.

    I suppose a better description would be "non-combustible, non-volatile".

Porsche dealer here fills the tires with Nitrogen and it turned out to be very popular among fast cars. This website may help you see the difference:

I wonder if any has ever use Helium in tires. Unsprung weight would be decreased.

Acutally, Helium is highly diffusable, so it would leak out very rapidly. You would need a hefty supply, and refill every day.

A true story - many years ago a friend owned a tire place in Stamford, CT. A middle-aged woman drove in one day and complained that her car was riding really "hard." The owner walked around the car looking at the tires, and then asked her if she'd changed the air in the tires "from summer air to winter air." Of course she replied "No, I didn't know I had to." He told her that he'd have his assistant do it for her (the young kid then let the air out of each tire and refilled it), and that while he normally charges $5.00 a tire for this service, since she didn't know about it and was "so nice," he'd do it for free. Needless to say, he had a customer for life (and probably many referrals as well).
