http://www.planet-9.com/gallery/files/3/718boxster.jpg The new Porsche 718 Boxster20 years after the first Boxster made its debut, Porsche is restructuring its mid-engine roadsters. The designation for the new generation of models is 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S.

The two-seat convertibles are now more powerful yet more fuel efficient. With them, Porsche continues the tradition of the four-cylinder flat engines that were used in the Porsche 718 mid-engine sports cars that won numerous races back in the 1950s and 1960s, among them being the legendary Targa Florio and Le Mans. The centrepiece of the new model series is the newly developed four-cylinder flat engine with turbocharging. The 718 Boxster develops 220 kW (300 hp) of power from two litres of engine displacement, while the 718 Boxster S attains 257 kW (350 hp) from 2.5 litres of displacement. In the S-model, Porsche also uses a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. In fact Porsche is now the only manufacturer to offer VTG technology in production cars with petrol-driven engines, both in the 911 Turbo and in the 718 Boxster S. Impressive here are the considerable power gain of 26 kW (35 hp) compared to the previous Boxster models and the efficiency of the new turbo engines. The new 718 Boxster models have fuel economy improvements of up to 13 per cent.
The completely new chassis tuning and stronger brakes provide for passionate and sporty driving pleasure. The design of the new model line was also comprehensively advanced. The vehicle was completely revised except for the luggage compartment lids, the windscreen and the convertible top. Inside, a newly designed dash panel frames the cockpit. In addition, the latest generation of Porsche Communication Management (PCM) with a state-of-the-art touchscreen is included as standard. The navigation module is available as an option.
Efficient turbo power from four cylinders

The launch of the new 718 Boxster generation represents the first time since the late 1960s that Porsche is implementing sports cars with four-cylinder flat engines again since the end of the 1960s. Turbocharging significantly boosts torque. The two-litre engine of the 718 Boxster has a maximum torque of 380 Newton metres (gain of 100 Newton metres), which is available from 1,950 rpm to 4,500 rpm. The 2.5-litre engine of the 718 Boxster S even attains 420 Newton metres (60 Newton metres more) over a speed range from 1,900 rpm to 4,500 rpm.
Thus, the new 718 Boxster models sprint even faster. The 718 Boxster – with PDK and the Sport Chrono Package – sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds (0.8 seconds faster). The 718 Boxster S with the same equipment completes this discipline in 4.2 seconds (0.6 seconds faster). The top speed of the 718 Boxster is 275 km/h, and the 718 Boxster S has a top speed of 285 km/h.
The Porsche turbo concept is boosting driving performance while improving fuel economy. In the 718 Boxster, the four-cylinder flat engine with PDK has a NEDC fuel consumption figure of 6.9 l/100 km (1.0 l/100 km less). In the 718 Boxster S, the 2.5-litre turbo flat engine with PDK consumes just 7.3 l/100 km (0.9 l/100 km less).
The 718 models come with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. The Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK), which now features fuel-saving virtual gears, is available as an option.
New design emphasises sharpened profile

The 718 model line can be made out at first glance. The front end of the new roadster exhibits a much more sculptural form. The front has a wider and more masculine appearance. The much larger cooling air intakes at the front are a distinct exterior expression of the new turbo engine concept. The front end of the 718 Boxster is rounded out by the new design of the bi-xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights. LED headlights with four-point daytime running lights are available as a new option.
From a side view, identifying features of the new model line include new, independently styled wings and side sills. Larger air inlet panels with two fins emphasise the car's dynamic look. The doors are now designed without door handle recess covers. New 19-inch wheels are standard on the 718 Boxster S. 20-inch diameter wheels are available as an option.

The Porsche 718 Boxster S

The redesigned rear body of the 718 Boxster has a much wider look – especially due to the accent strip with integrated Porsche badge between the tail lights. The entirely redeveloped tail lights are distinguished by their three-dimensional LED technology and four-point brake lights.
Sportier tuning of chassis for greater agility

In its driving dynamics, the new roadster follows in the tracks of the original 718. The car's completely retuned chassis enhances cornering performance. The electromechanical steering system is configured to be ten per cent more direct. This makes the 718 Boxster even more agile and easier to steer, both on circuit tracks and in everyday traffic.
Available at extra charge for the roadsters is Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) with a ten millimetre lower ride height. For the first time, the PASM sport chassis with a 20 millimetre lower ride height is available as an option for the 718 Boxster S. The active chassis, which has also been retuned, offers an even broader spread between long-distance touring comfort and dynamic sporty stiffness.
Extensive Sport Chrono Package for dynamic driving experience

As in the 911, the optional Sport Chrono Package now comprises the Individual programme in addition to the three settings Normal, Sport and Sport Plus. In sports cars with PDK, the Sport Response Button has been added, which is located at the middle of the driving programme switch. Inspired by car racing, it enables the driver to configure the responsiveness of the engine and the PDK to be very direct.
Awaiting the driver in the cockpit of the 718 Boxster is the familiar Porsche interior environment, now upgraded with new elements such as the instrument panel. Another central element of the new interior layout is the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) unit with mobile phone preparation, audio interfaces and the Sound Package Plus with 110 watts of audio power. The PCM can be extended with optional modules to thoroughly adapt it to personal requirements. For instance, the navigation module with voice control is available, which makes it easy to input driving destinations. In addition, the Connect Plus module is available as an extension of the navigation module; it provides extended online services.
The market launch of the new mid-engine sports car begins on April 30 in Europe. 718 Boxster pricing starts at 53,646 euros in Germany, and the 718 Boxster S from 66,141 euros, each with country-specific features and including VAT.

Porsche Press release for the 718 Boxster

Unlike the other thread, I won't tell you to use a search-engine and won't spread the information out across a bunch of posts. Without further ado or sarcasm, https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/products/porsche-boxster-model-series-718-roadster-12163.html

Agreed, even the base with a tune will be a lot of fun. Now that this will be possible, the S may not be quite as desirable for $12k more. Of course the S offers more than just HP and TQ, but I think the aftermarket tuning will close the gap some. $2k for another 60hp should be very easy.

Re: Porsche Press release for the 718 Boxster

Unless the new GTS will have a flat-6, it's time for me to start saving for a 911 before they go 4 cylinder or all electric. No wonder my 1973 is worth stupid money these days.

My guess is the GTS will also be a 4, with a few extra HP and some different trim. Spyders will disappear for now, and the only sixes left will be 911s. If anyone thinks charging $5000 more for a four cylinder turbo over the wonderful NA six is reasonable, good luck. It's pure marketing. As for the rear end of the car, with that enormous P O R S C H E logo? Really overdone IMO.

Wonder if the PCM could be swapped

I do not see extra vent to release heat from that turbo and the 4 cylinder engine working hard to get that HP/TQ in a mid-engine design....I wonder how will engine and other components hold longevity. I guess time will tell but I have already my reservations.

I really don't like what they did to the back or the upper dash. The back is way too busy with those new reflectors and that silly badge under the spoiler. I think the current one is much better. The dash seems like change just for the sake of change and I like the current clock location better.

Obviously the new PCM is an upgrade and I like the LED headlights and the new steering wheel.

The video doesn't really do much for showing off the sound. It's the sound and the feel that's going to be the big win or loss on these. I'm looking forward to seeing some on the track!

Re: Porsche Press release for the 718 Boxster

I pretty much love all the exterior changes. It got busier, but not in a bad way. Front is basically as close to Ferrari Modena as possible without going to the court. 981 Boxster's smile is gone. New taillights are smaller and cooler. I always thought 981 taillights are too big. I'd want those exterior changes!

How engine feels and sounds only the test drive will tell

But the dash... OMG, WTF? What were they thinking. Ruining beautiful and beautifully integrated 981 vents for the sake of pointless change... Now it looks like somebody spit on the dash, four times. And the shape, where they were getting the inspiration???????

(And I hope sport design steering wheel is still an option)
I actually think the badge on the rear bumper is the worst part of the design. Looks tacked on. Saying that, I'm not a fan of the new interior (vents), or changes to the exterior, either. Hoping that we get to hear the engine sometime soon :)
Microsite is up on Porsche.com....exhaust note is about a quarter of the way down. Not so sure I'm diggin it.

718 Microsite

Overall, I like it. I don't see a big problem with the interior and I really like the relocated lock/emergency flasher switches, but I DON'T like that PORSCHE badge stuck on the back. That's pretty tacky. It's an interesting evolution. Bring on the Cayman! :D

I like the new changes, nothing earth shatteringly different, but I agree the new smaller taillights are better and I like the way the spoiler flows. The front changes are also fine by me. Porsche does not put out many clunkers in my opinion.

Here's a link to the official Porsche North America press release Powerful purity: The new Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S.

From the release:

Efficient and powerful flat-four cylinder engines

A completely new generation of turbocharged flat-four cylinder engines takes performance and efficiency in the 718 Boxster to new heights. Turbocharging significantly boosts torque. The two-liter engine of the 718 Boxster puts out 280 lb.-ft. of torque, which is available from 1,950 rpm to 4,500 rpm. To put this into perspective: The new engine makes 74 lb.-ft. or 36 percent more torque than the previous powertrain and does so over a much broader power band. The 2.5-liter engine of the 718 Boxster S develops 309 lb.-ft. from 1,900 rpm to 4,500 rpm – a 43 lb.-ft. gain over the outgoing Boxster S engine.

This yields significant gains in acceleration. The 718 Boxster – when equipped with PDK and the Sport Chrono Package – sprints from zero to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds (0.7 seconds faster than the previous model). The 718 Boxster S outfitted with these performance-enhancing options reaches 60 miles per hour in 4.0 seconds (0.5 seconds faster than its predecessor). The top track speed of the 718 Boxster is 170 miles per hour (8 miles per hour faster than before), and the 718 Boxster S can achieve a top track speed of 177 miles per hour (5 miles per hour faster than previously).

Turbocharging also helps the powertrains of the 718 Boxster and Boxster S to be up to 14 percent more efficient than the previous engines according to the New European Driving Cycle. EPA figures will be available at a later date.

True to their pure, driver focused character, the 718 Boxster models come standard with a six-speed manual transmission. The Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK), which now features fuel-saving virtual gears, is available as an option.

...

Sportier suspension tuning and calibration for greater agility

The outstanding dynamic performance of its namesake served as inspiration to continue to improve upon the exceptional handling of the mid-engine roadster. The 718 Boxster's completely retuned suspension enhances cornering performance. The electric steering system is 10 percent more direct than previously. This does not only increase agility and precision but also maneuverability, on challenging roads and track as well as in every-day traffic.

...

The 718 Boxster and Boxster S go on sale now and will reach U.S. dealers in late June 2016. The 718 Boxster has a starting MSRP of $56,000, and the 718 Boxster S from $68,400, excluding the $1,050 destination charge.
So the base 781 Boxster is now as fast as a 981 Boxster S, while the 718 Boxster S is faster than a GT4 and as fast as a base 991.2. That's actually quite a contrast to the earlier quotes about "putting more distance" between the Boxster/Cayman and the 911.

I agree. There was never a way Porsche would make this less of a car on paper. For me, my 981 order was always a hedge on the arrival of this car. I didn't think I would like it better, and planned to change my order if I did. At this moment, I'm happy to keep my incoming 981 Cayman GTS (from an aesthetic perspective, and theoretically from an engine perspective); but am looking forward to reading initial reviews.

Overall current 981 GTS (or sport design) looks much better. I would say 718 has less emotional look. Oh, and that interior air vents are biggest fail in the world, thats actually a downgrade..
BTW is that a bigger front brake caliper?
