Post Gloss-It EVO Quartz 5H Coating

One of the items I noticed about members picking up their new Porsches, particularly GT4's was that many of them were getting something they called a "Quartz" treatment or Quartz coating on their car. Members seemingly were paying thousands of dollars for this coating as well. My first thought was "Why are people paying $2000 for a wax job?". Even the best waxes I've used are gone or severely reduced after a couple of car washes, so why would someone pay $2k for something that didn't last? The answer is they don't. A Quartz coating is not like a normal polymer or carnuba car wax. As I understand it the chemicals in the Quartz coating actually bond with automotive clear coats to form a hardened layer on top of the clear coat. This layer is supposed to remain for a long period of time until it is either polished off or eventually abrades away. (As a point of reference Gloss-It charges $1250 to do 2 coats of 5H on a car, but you can, of course, buy the product from the Gloss-It site and do it yourself as I did)

Think of it as a protection layer for your paint protection layer, or in the case of applying over a clear bra, it provides an additional layer of protection. The coating is also supposed to provide a deeper, wetter looking gloss/shine to your car. With a yellow car it is very hard for me to judge depth of shine like you could on say a black car. I will certainly say that by the time I was done applying 2 coats to my entire car, it was indeed very shiny, but it's also a new car so my paint was not in bad shape to start with.

Re: Gloss-It EVO Quartz 5H Coating

As a follow up to this article, I drove my car at the autocross this past Sunday and 30 minutes each way to and from, along with a rally drive on Saturday so my car picked up some dirt. It got caught in the rain while I was in a building on Monday and when I came out later I saw how the rain had beaded up into tiny micro beads carrying the dirt with it, in other words, the coating seems to be working as advertised. I'll post more after I get a chance to wash the car, it keeps raining here...

Re: Gloss-It EVO Quartz 5H Coating

Does anyone remember the days of Polyglycoat (spelling?)? I am assuming that this is different and, hopefully, much better. Back in the day, dealers charged a pretty sporty amount for this and I had it done on a car or two. But, over time the shine diminished and waxing over it did not do much good. Ended up removing it (pain in the derriere.....if memory serves it required mineral spirits or something of that ilk to get it off).

Re: Gloss-It EVO Quartz 5H Coating

My local detailer who specializes in high end work has been pushing this or a similar system. It looks great and i believe it truly does what it says but as presented to me you have to be very careful with the prep work and make sure the paint/clear coat finish is as you want it prior to putting it on as once its on- it's pretty much there to stay. Also apparently if you ever have to get body/paint work it potentially becomes an issue for the shop as they need to be aware you have the coating.

At a PCA meet at the shop this spring i thought he quoted around $2K to prep/detail the car and then apply the coating. Too pricey for me but it definitely seems like a different thing than the old 'space age sealant" pitch and might be particularly attractive for people with black cars or other difficult to care for finishes and might be worth it.

How long does the finish last? Can you (or even should you) apply wax over it in the future?

Again, I would recommend visiting Gloss-It's website (link in the article) as it has all the details on the products. I went with the 5H which is guaranteed for 2 years or I think 30,000 miles. Their 7H and 9H last even longer. Rich told me you can wax over the top of it but there is no need to, he said using their gloss enhancer detail spray was really all you need to do for maximum shine.

My Expel installer recommended Ceramic Pro and that is what I went with. For the 5 coating option I paid about $ 1,600. truly amazing stuff, I use distilled water on a micro fiber towel to clean the car. I have never washed it. I also did both my street wheels and track tires all wheels and calipers were done. use a cleaner they supplied micro fiber towel all brake dust comes off in 4 minutes a wheel ! while pricey I will keep this car for many years ( kept my 993 over 15 years ) .

Since this product was put on over the expel wrap no need to prepare other than clean the wrap but I wanted an expert to do it. Paid over 90 k for the car worth protecting the investment in my opinion .

Re: Gloss-It EVO Quartz 5H Coating

In March of this year I got a silica based coating applied to my car. The product is from Modesta. I've owned my car for 9 years, its my DD, and I've never had covered parking. Consequently, my car needed multi-stage paint correction, which was the largest portion of the bill.

    Hi Cayman S,

In response to your question regarding how long the Evo Quartz Ceramic Coating last depends on which one you apply to your vehicle. At Gloss-It we apply 2 coats of the "Quartz" coating. The 5H has a 2 year warranty, 7H 3 year warranty, and 9H which can only be purchased by a certified Pro 9H. You can read more on the Evo Quartz Coatings here. You can apply a wax over the "Quartz" coating, although you can maintain the glossy appearance with our Gloss Enhancer with a ultra microfiber towel.

"Evo Quartz Coating is weather, abrasive, and chemical resistant providing excellent semi-permanent protection. Traditional protective coatings like carnuba wax and conventional polymer coatings degrade in a shorter amount of time forcing the consumer to use more product over time. Using degreaser or alkaline detergents on wax or other polymer coatings will strip the protective layer immediately, exposing the clear coat. Evo Quartz Coating structural nature makes the coating resistant to abrasion caused by continual washes and impervious to most chemical substances. In addition Evo Quartz Coating adds depth plus color darkening effects to the clear coat and surfaces applied, to give the surface a candy gloss appearance. Depending on the number of applied layers, the thickness of coating can vary but using at least 2 coats will achieve a hardness to over 9H."

    Hi 1st Cayman in USA,

In regards to your question of the cost of two layers of Evo Quartz 5H depends on the size of the vehicle. The 30ml bottle of any of "Quartz" Coatings is enough to apply 2 coats to a small vehicle such as a hatchback, crossover, or small sedan or coupe. A 50ml bottle of the "Quartz" Coating will be needed to apply 2 coats to a larger vehicle such as a full size pick up truck or large SUV.

Pricing can be found on Gloss-It.com

    30ml bottle of Evo Quartz 5h = $75
    50ml bottle of Evo Quartz 5h = $130

    30ml bottle of Evo Quartz 7h = $75
    50ml bottle of Evo Quartz 7h = $130

Evo Quartz Pro 9h can only be purchased and installed by an Evo Quartz Certified Installer.

Re: Gloss-It EVO Quartz 5H Coating

    A few questions for y'all:
Can this product be used without any power buffing/polishing on a finish in excellent condition? I have an aversion to power buffing. Anyone have experience with this?
What is your preferred solvent(s) for stripping off old carnuba or polymer wax?
What are the preferred solvents/cleaners for tar and bug removal with this quartz coating? Love bugs are really bad and common in the South, along with all the other usual bugs.

I just purchased the Quartz 5H, am planning to apply it to my Cayman R this weekend. The car has a full-hood Xpel clear bra.

From what I've read on this thread lt looks like you apply the Quartz even on surfaces that are covered by Xpel. Is that correct? Seems like a waste to apply it to a clear bra, maybe I read this wrong. Anyone know the answer? Thanks in advance.

I just applied Gloss-It EVO Quartz 5H to my blue Cayman R. Went on quite easily, and yes, that small bottle does contain enough for two coats of a Cayman, including the wheels.

I applied it to my car's full-hood clear bra, as per the instruction I found here. Thanks for the help!

The result looks great, although it's only been on the car for an hour. We shall see how well it holds up over time.

Seven weeks later, the results look great. The car's been hand washed a three or four times since with soapy water. The water still beads up in tiny little drops.

The car's been tracked three days and gotten pretty dirty. Still shines up well afterward. I'm sold on this stuff!

Re: Gloss-It EVO Quartz 5H Coating

    Hi all,

I've used a competing product, professionally applied on new paint with a lifetime guarantee (that out of courtesy I won't name). AFAIK it's a very similar substance. Four years in the Australian sun, and often sitting under a film of corrosive concrete dust from the factory across the road at work, and the finish still looks better than new.

I had a long scrape along the side from an attacking soccer ball that just polished off, bird mess and bugs just wash off. Wax didn't do anything but a gloss enhancer worked well.
