Back in Black! - Porsche Design Edition 1

I went to my doorstep today to find a couple of packages. Christophorus issue 330 which is already being discussed in the forums, but also a "black box" from Porsche Cars North America. There was something a bit unusual about this black box. There were 3 subtle black stripes running down the middle of the box ala the Porsche Design Edition One Cayman S. Interesting, let's open the box!

The inside of the box slid out of the black sleeve and then opened up to reveal a silver box inside with a black band around it. Imprinted on the black band in slightly more reflective black letters stating "Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1". Ok slide the black band off and the silver box folds open into two halves. In the right half is a letter from David Pryor the Vice President of Marketing at Porsche Cars North America, Inc. The letter basically tells a bit about the car as well as the contents of the box.

Speaking of the contents of the box, here is what was included:
Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 brochure booklet on the car, accessories and design philosophy.
Porsche Design Edition 1 catalog of items available through the program.
Black Notepad with embossed black Cayman and a white pencil to write with!

Here are some photos of the items:

The black notebook (closed) and the Design Edition 1 items catalog showing the available leather jacket:

The black notebook open with white pencil for taking notes:

How do you get one? I'm not sure, but I suppose you could ask your local dealer if they have them or call PCNA and request one. Anyone who owns a Design Edition 1 car should have one of these and anyone interested in more Design Edition 1 items in the catalog would be interested as well. Speaking of the catalog here are the items listed:

P1810 - Belt
P1140 - Jacket
P2150 - Briefcase
P2160 - Laptop Case
P3120 - Aluminum writing pen
P3310 - Billfold
P3320 - Cardholder
P3410 - Cuff links
P3420 - Keyring
P3630 - Lighter
P3710 - Pocket Knife
P6340 - Flat 6 Chronograph watch - this is NOT the one that comes with the car and is better looking and more interesting in my opinion.
P6320 - Flat 6 Quartz Chronograph - this is the one with the car
P8400 - Sunglasses

Yes, I have been enjoying issue 330. Particularly enjoyed the photos of the ladies who partook in the "ladies only" driver education course.

I got one of them in the mail last week. The note pad is pretty cool with the white pencil.

The PDE 1 was essentially DOA. There was no point in overpaying for a black CS when it will be getting redesigned in 6 months time.

What on earth were the dealers who ordered them thinking? Some dealers need to get knocked upside their head, like when they order a $65K CS without automatic climate control to sell in the open market.

I don't think dealers had a choice, they had to take them. If someone is in the market for a black Cayman S with the same or similar options they would actually save money by ordering the Design Edition 1. I don't think it was DOA, but I do think the market for one is more limited than for say just a Cayman S.

My dealer had a few of those box sets left over from the UK launch and he gave me one, knowing I am a hopeless collector of stuff like that.

I had one of these boxes waiting for me when I got back from the DE this weekend... I haven't opened it yet - so, thanks for the preview...

I have design edition yet have not received this package. Wonder if my dealer has one and negleted to inform me. And yes i thought about a Carrera, but the difference is I have one of the best stock caymans money can buy out there, while for 10k more i would just have an entry level 911. If i were to buy a 911 it would be turbo all the way, which is of course almost twice what i paid.

Is this a new section where we can all post photos of our junk mail,
or does it have to be specific to Porsche ?

In Italy prices aren't listed.. you have to go to your dealer (or phone to) and ask!

I could've gotten a 997S or stretching out for a turbo, but really wanted the CaymanS.
I'm sure the gobs of power on the turbo would be fun. But I really prefer the esthetics of the Cayman and the midengine. The newer 911s look "tailheavy" to me, where the Cayman looks like the older 991 I had and really loved the look. The rear engine 911 is inherently an archaic engineering design. They've done remarkable things with it, but they designed the carrera GT with a mid engine intentionally.
