Stuttgart - Porsche has officially given the green light to a new lightweight Cayman model variant due to debut for the 2012 model year. The Cayman CS or "Club Sport" will be shown at the Los Angeles auto show later this year and go on sale in 2011 as a 2012 model. The CS will receive some of the same treatment given to the recent Boxster Spyder such as lighter weight components, fabric door pulls, and a uniquely styled set of lightweight wheels modeled after those on the GT2 RS. Recent press reports indicated that this new variant was shown to Sales Managers in US and Europe at recent internal Porsche meetings and given the positive response from their dealership network Porsche has chosen to move forward with production.

A number of technical items have been circulated internally among the team responsible for this variant and include the following:
333hp 3.4L engine
Sport PASM suspension - 20mm lower than stock ride height
A/C, stereo are optional
162-184lbs lighter than stock Cayman S
Aluminum doors, fabric door pulls
Lightweight hatch, optional lexan window (europe only)
19" unique lightweight wheels
Sport bucket seats
Revalved steering assist
Locking rear differential standard
Uprated brakes (optional)
Restylized front fascia
Cayman Club Sport side graphics
Rear diffuser
Ducktail-style larger rear spoiler (fixed)
Club Sport Insignia badging in interior
Optional "Track Pack", includes partial roll cage, harness and fittings plus fire extinguisher (europe only)
Cited performance numbers - 0-62 in 4.6s
Base Price: $66,330

Well... I knew this was just and exercise for Porsche to get rid of their extra parts before a new model rolls around. But... since I'm looking to buy and the timing it right, all they had to do was give me a fun new color... but sun-faded celery-green? Come on guys! You aren't even trying!

Sure, a new bit of body styling like the spyder got would have pushed me over the edge (without the need for an exciting new exterior color). But we got nothing. I'll wait for the new model. This thing is a bust :( (add back the AC and radio, and weight savings is a joke)

Disappointing to be honest with you.

Being that this is a coupe, the addition of the AC will be vital if you ever plan to sell this car. The weight savings are negligible after that, and I guess what you are really paying for is the suspension, LSD and seats?

Has anyone got word on what they changed to increase the output of the engine? This simple mod could be done to Gen II CSs and it would almost be a level playing ground.

I honestly don't understand all the disappointment to be honest. I think some of you may have had unrealistic expectations.

Consdier that, the Spyder saves, what, 176 pounds over the Boxster, compared to the 120-odd ones in the Cayman R. Porsche claims that the curb weight for the Cayman R is 10 pounds less than for the Spyder. It has 10 more HP than the Spyder does. It has an LSD, stock, which is a pretty big deal for a 987 platform car.

This is a pretty decent step in the right direction for Porsche.

If you download the PDF brochure and go to page 38 you can see the exterior colors available. I think they are the same as S except for the rotten lettuce. I assume deleting the "PORSCHE" side stripe is not an option. I want to go with gray or black body color i think.

I launched the "Build Your Porsche" web page but the R is not yet available. I still think its dumb that you have to get stereo if you want SC. Maybe they will also force me to get AC if i want SC :(

Reminder that you can tune to the live broadcast of the Cayman R press conference by Porsche at the LA Auto Show today a 10:55 AM, Pacific Time, about one hour from now.

Cayman R Livestream

Can someone help me find the exact location in the press release where it mentions if this new Cayman R will be arriving as a MY2012 or MY2011 next spring? I can't find it. Thanks. z356

Per the just completed LA Auto press conference, it is going to be a MY2011!!!! That is another negative. z356

Damn. Parts bin, run out model special. Hardly a world exclusive. No doubt the best Cayman that is available and will be a great drive, just could have been so much better. When i upgrade my Gen 1 in a years time, will be a consideration, but so will a 997.1 GT3.

Not that surprised though. This car will be much quicker point to point than a 997.2. There is no way they can make it quicker than a 997.2S.

Noticed on the built your own that the stereo is automatically marked and DOES NOT require the sound plus package ala the Spyder. But it also says the stereo has 4 speakers and is 2 x 25W. Plus if you pick the PDK it appears you automatically get the paddle shifters instead of the buttons on the steering variety.

I think that some members are correct when they state the configurator is broken.

When I change the paint color, they wanna charge me $9,999. LOL

As usual P marketing did a great job and the car does look fresh even in (or maybe because) of the lime green (P new corporate colour?) I cannot however not think that P missed an oppurtunity by not presenting the Boxster Spyder as the 987 Spyder (it looks different enough from the Boxster) and then turning the Cayman into a 987 Spyder coupe (called 987 "Spyderman") with similar front bumper, rear wing and diffuser, particularly if they are reluctant to raise the hp.

This way they would have created something special (as they did with the Spyder). Now we just have a Cay S with redesigned suspension, insignificant weight savings, a poorly integrated aerokit and of course (virtually) no power increase.

K:

I'm so not getting this post. "987 Spyder" is better than "Boxster Spyder"? Why?

Are you saying they should have called the Cayman R a 987 Spyder Coupe? or that it actually is one?

If you ever get a chance to actually drive one of these without the radio and A/C, perhaps with the lightweight battery, with the beefed up suspension it comes with and the lightweight wheels, standard LSD AND the 10 extra HP, you'll realize that they have created something special.

At the beginning of your post, you say the car looks fresh. At the end, you say it's a poorly integrated aero kit. No power increase? Huh...Really?

For the equipment you get, it's not a lot more money.

I kinda like it! Make mine goofy green, w/sport exhaust, lightweight battery, no A/C or radio. 6-speeds with sport shifter will do.

I think when we see one of these on the road, it will be a real event. I like the car...and the package. I'm sure it will be a ball to drive, as the Spyder is. It would be a great 4th car.:banana::banana::banana:

It's strange - yesterday, i did not like the diarrhoea green at all. I was thinking white, black or yellow. Now, after staring at it all night long, i'm starting to reallyt like it with the glossy black mirrors, spoiler and black wheels (the LA Times video on youtube has black wheels). It makes no sense but i like it.

You guys all need to go to porscheusa.com and check out the photos. The interior looks terrific. I'd love to have one these for track weekends! Who needs a radio and A/C? I think this color will be terrific in daylight.
