Stuttgart - Porsche has officially given the green light to a new lightweight Cayman model variant due to debut for the 2012 model year. The Cayman CS or "Club Sport" will be shown at the Los Angeles auto show later this year and go on sale in 2011 as a 2012 model. The CS will receive some of the same treatment given to the recent Boxster Spyder such as lighter weight components, fabric door pulls, and a uniquely styled set of lightweight wheels modeled after those on the GT2 RS. Recent press reports indicated that this new variant was shown to Sales Managers in US and Europe at recent internal Porsche meetings and given the positive response from their dealership network Porsche has chosen to move forward with production.

A number of technical items have been circulated internally among the team responsible for this variant and include the following:
333hp 3.4L engine
Sport PASM suspension - 20mm lower than stock ride height

162-184lbs lighter than stock Cayman S
Aluminum doors, fabric door pulls

19" unique lightweight wheels
Sport bucket seats
Revalved steering assist
Locking rear differential standard
Uprated brakes (optional)
Restylized front fascia
Cayman Club Sport side graphics
Rear diffuser
Ducktail-style larger rear spoiler (fixed)
Club Sport Insignia badging in interior

Too bad MEGA isn't here any more...he'd suck this news up :)

Thanks Ken - sounds promising! I was expecting -20mm suspension like Spyder, rather than Sport PASM like 997 option. Do you think this could be a miscommunication or do you really expect PASM?

You know I'm not sure, I'm seeking clarification on some of the points that seem a little rough, but again this comes from items circulating internally at Porsche, not from any official press release so the chances of getting someone to "verify" something in writing are pretty slim. :hilarious:

With regard to HP increase I think he was comparing to the 2006 S's 295 HP vs. the 2012's 333, which would be an increasse of 38hp, or 38/295 which is a 12.8% increase over the numbers in 2006, but yeah only 13hp more than the currently shipping 320.

For perspective on the 0-100kph time of 4.6 seconds, the current Cayman S is conservatively rated at 5.2s with manual and 4.9s with PDK in Sport+ Mode and the new GT3 3.8 is rated at 4.1s. I would guess that the 4.6s time for the Cayman CS is with PDK Sport+ option...

Sounds fabulous. I greatly admire my 2006 Cayman S, but the thought of about 13% more HP and perhaps 150 lbm less weight catches my interest.

I can do without the stereo, particularly if Bose has anything to do with it. But in my locale, Maryland, the AC would be a must...well, here goes some more weight., back on the chassis.

Based on your information, Ken, I would seriously consider a new Cayman S Club Sport.

Cool car. Id like to see it get the Sport Classic Fuchs. Not sure its worth leaving a current Cayman S for one though. The improvements are marginal at best. The upgrade from a 2006 CS would be about $30-35,000 out of pocket. Just add an exhaust and a couple other items for $3,500 and reach the same results. As a person looking to get into a Cayman for the first time, rather than upgrade, it does look like a compelling option however. That said, Id never buy a new Porsche when you can get as-new 3yr old cars for half price, but thats just me.

Which Boxster (yr/model) did you comparing to the Spyder - I've been kicking around the idea of "trading" in my '08 Boxster S for the Spyder. However, I feel I would be "upgrading" based on looks only and not much on performance (negligible).

After watching Vicky's Spyder review on Fifth Gear, she agreed. Go fig.

Can't wait to see it! I have an 09 CS so for the differences it is not worth trading it in for one but it might be tempting if cosmetically its different enough. As mentionned, a few grand in mods and a Gen II is as fast and you can probably buy the light weight wheels to add to it as well.

Please, Oh Please! tell me it wont get that god awful ducktail spoiler! I was waiting for a new track version but will not buck up if this styling feature makes the cut. (unless I can delete the option).

This is great news, as we can finally put the speculation to bed.

Interesting as this car may be, I'm far more interested in what changes 2012 will bring to the regular Cayman and Cayman S.

shame about the power for a CS

my old gen 1 was 343Bhp

So 333 is a little poor.

I did go for a TTRS in the end over a gen 2 Cayman mainly becasue the dealer did not come backto me and All i ever did was chase them

any way mine is just about to be mapped at 420BHp

" TTRS car went down the strip in the UK yesterday
0-60MPH 3.15 seconds and low 11's 1/4 mile

yes that was 3.15 seconds and was in MPh

now that was bloody fast for an Audi TT :)

I was hoping for a bigger engine or turbo.

But I'm just glad they're not scared of making the Cayman faster than the base Carreras. They've been keeping it right around the bottom of the 911 line up as to not eat in to the 911 sales. What they need to do is just get rid of the Carrera (2) & Carrera (2)S. And have a little faster, better Cayman S fill in that spot, then start the 911 line up with the Carrera 4, as the 911 should be AWD.

I like my manual, but PDK is faster, and has an extra gear for better transitions especially on the low end. Some things are worth the extra weight, like a BIGGER engine or AWD for power distribution, etc.

CR:

I think there are a whole lot of 911 enthusiasts who would argue with you on you model re-arrangement plan. Some actually like the rwd 911! No accounting for taste, I guess.

I wonder if diffuser means Boxter rear bumper. Not too exciting if you ask me. The only thing that gets me interested is seeing the duck tail spoiler. It can't be too big or it would induce drag. I wonder if it's going to look like part of the spoiler on the boxter spyder?

the point that i was trying to make is the car isnt revolutionary. The boxster spyder is revolutionary, it is special and it harkens back to the original roadster models that porsche produced in teh 50s and 60s... The Clubsport, or whatever they are going to call it, is going to be a cool car, dont get me wrong. Hopefully the overall package is vibrant and different looking like the spyder is.

If they cut the back end of the clubsport like a 904... I would be sold and the car would be different... how BA would that be?!?
