    Porsche Returns to Racing!

Porsche returns to Le Mans in 2014
Development programme confirmed for LMP1 sports prototype

Stuttgart. Porsche returns to Le Mans with a works-run LMP1 sports prototype. The first outing of the completely new developed race car is planned for the year 2014. With 16 overall victories, Porsche is the most successful manufacturer in Le Mans. The most recent win was in 1998 with the Porsche 911 GT1.

“Motorsport was always an essential part of the Porsche brand,” emphasises Matthias Müller, President of the Executive Board at Porsche AG. “So for us it was only a matter of time before we returned as a factory to the top league of racing. Porsche’s successes in Le Mans are unrivalled. We want to follow up on this with the 17th outright victory.”

With the RS Spyder sports prototype that was run with great success from 2006 to 2008 by the factory-backed Penske Racing team in the USA and to 2010 by several customer teams worldwide, Porsche has set the benchmark recently in the LMP2 category. “With the RS Spyder we proved that our motorsport engineers in Weissach are at the forefront,” says Wolfgang Hatz, Board Member for Research and Development at Porsche AG. “For instance, we were the first to run a high-revving race engine with direct fuel injection, DFI, setting new standards in performance and efficiency. Recently, with the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, we adopted a completely new drive technology for racing purposes and achieved a considerable reduction in consumption.”

Hartmut Kristen, Head of Porsche Motorsport, is already prepared for one of the most challenging development programmes in the company’s history. “We’re looking forward to the task of developing new technologies and to continue on with the success of the Porsche RS Spyder. After the conclusion of our works-supported sports prototype programme in the American Le Mans Series we have kept up with the latest technological advances. Now we will begin with detailed research in order to evaluate the various concept alternatives for our new car. These obviously depend on how the regulations for the year 2014 look in detail. In principle, these regulations are interesting for us because the integration of our hybrid technology in the vehicle concept is one possible option.”

Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood claimed the first overall victory for Porsche in 1970 with the legendary 917 short-tail. The 16th and by now last overall win was secured by Laurent Aiello, Stéphane Ortelli and Allan McNish in 1998 with the 911 GT1. In the years 2008 and 2009, the Porsche RS Spyder sports prototype won the title in the LMP2 category.

Hartmut Kristen, Head of Porsche Motorsport, looked forward to development and what the new 2014 regulations will entail.

“We’re looking forward to the task of developing new technologies and to continue on with the success of the Porsche RS Spyder,” he said. “After the conclusion of our works-supported sports prototype program in the American Le Mans Series we have kept up with the latest technological advances. Now we will begin with detailed research in order to evaluate the various concept alternatives for our new car. These obviously depend on how the regulations for the year 2014 look in detail. In principle, these regulations are interesting for us because the integration of our hybrid technology in the vehicle concept is one possible option.”

An update from Audi Sport, Porsche's sister brand, in a statement said this decision was a purely Porsche one:

“This is the decision of Porsche company, a decision in which Audi is not involved. Audi relishes the prospect of every strong new opponent at Le Mans and in the new FIA Sportscar World Championship. Porsche’s entry into the LMP1 class is evidence of the high level of attraction of sport prototypes”.

    Re: Porsche Returns to Racing!

Best news I have heard all week. I had thought about going to Le Mans next year if Porsche was going to field the 918 in the GT class, but looks like its worth waiting until 2014 to see the new LMP1 car. I still wonder if they plan on racing the 918 in the near future.

Corvette has been dominating the GT class, so hopefully with the new 4L will make Porsche more competitive soon, the return to LMP1 is icing on the cake.

I was also planning for 2013, but may wait for 2014 as well!

    Re: Porsche Returns to Racing!

Great news, now they have to win, let's see how long it takes them ! Don't think Audi and Peugeot are going to be intimidated. However, it does remain to be seen how long VW is going to allow two expensive racing operations work against each other. Success is not assured. It's going to be interesting to watch the races both on the track and corporate wise.

    Cheers

    Re: Porsche Returns to Racing!

If this is truly an independent attempt, maybe its Porsches way of saving face and putting a little thorn in the side of the Audi / VW group, given Porsches failed attempt to takeover VW. Either way it is really great news for this race fan to see the added competition.....

Yes!!! Porsche will once again rain king. I wonder if they will adopt the hybrid systems, diesel, or just run petrol cars. The video done by Porsche that announced their return is just epic and so well done. It brings a tear to the eye.

    Re: Porsche Returns to Racing!

I wonder how much the LMP1 will have in common with the 918 now that everybody mentions it. Thing is, Porsche mainly mentioned the RS Spyder as their inspiration....

Could be they are going to throw a curve ball here......

    This is brilliant news!

Although...., not to rain on the good news, I was really hoping for a return to F1, but I'll take LeMans!

    Re: Porsche Returns to Racing!

Awesome news. I just hope it goes ahead. Not sure how VW will be able to keep 2 racing operations going at once. Perhaps Audi will end. A shame because we all want Porsche to beat them.

I predict Audi will retire from LMP1 at the end of 2013. The Board of Directors would never allow hundreds of millions to be spent on internal rivalry....too bad!

    Re: Porsche Returns to Racing!

Interesting timing though-- with F1 now, recently, hinting/announcing that the 2014 engine formula will be a turbo V6 -- and Porsche doesn't have anything that really fits into the V6 formula --- presuming the the Vee configuration means boxster engine/ flat 6's are not welcome.

So, go where they will have a least some linkage to their customer base... all they need is some parity with the TDI configurations... and it will be interesting. Now if LeMans does start allowing "green" technology, then Porsche would be remiss not to jump in !!

I was thinking the same thing but weren't the Bentleys essentially run by Audi in 2003 when they won? And Audi was running that year, weren't they?
