vinyl wrap my cayman s???

i'm looking into vinyl wrapping my cayman s. I have an 06 w/ the expected paint chips and scratches here and there. i was weighing a complete repaint against a vinyl wrap. from the information that i have researched, the vinyl is a good idea. not only does it cost less than a paint job, it also has a preserving effect on your current paint (argueable i suppose) and is temporary (so to speak). vinyl is also a little more forgiving to damage than paint. in addition, vinyl gives you a lot of freedom for individuality. i currently have a silver cs. i was considering going w/ a matte silver vinyl and pairing it w/ matte black wheels. i have seen many other high end cars (lambos, slr's, etc) going w/ the matte black look. i think it looks very classy, but my opinion i guess. just looking for experiences, advice, opinions, and ideas. thanks to all who reply.

Re: vinyl wrap my cayman s???

There has been a lot of information on clear bras here, but I'm not sure I know anyone who has wrapped a complete Cayman other than a couple over in Europe that went for a custom paint look (Gulf livery, etc.)

Re: vinyl wrap my cayman s???

just spoke w/ skinzwraps.com rep.....they claim absolutely no damage to original paint......warranty for 5 yrs on the vinyl......and approx cost for a cs is $3000.....the only problem i'm having is that i want a matte silver or gray.....there hasn't been much demand for the color, so it is considered a special order that they won't consider ordering until they have several inquiries. the rep explained that the only two people who have inquired about matte silver is someone in san fran w/ a lambo and me in los angeles....i sure hope more show interest so that i can one day wrap my car.......lol.....

Re: vinyl wrap my cayman s???

So you buy a beautiful car . . . with a beautiful paint job . . . and you cover it with "Glad Warp". I don't get it. When I was a kid my grandmother bought a new sofa. She was scared to death someone might mess it up so she had it covered in vinyl. So nobody ever sat on it. When I think of covering a car I can't get the image of my grandmother's sofa out of my head.

However, it's your car. Do what you have to do.

When they do a car or truck completely covered in company names, isn't that also a special order? This type of commercial vinyl wraps is by far the biggest part of their business! How much extra is a special order? A matte, single color seems much easier to produce than one of these...

gfspencer, Why in the world do you want to preach that paint is GOOD and vinyl wrap is BAD? Very weird. Nightmares haunting you about grandmas and her new sofa?

When I was at Nurburgring last fall and saw this Enzo covered in a matte vinyl wrap, I touched it and examined it every way I could, and could not see a difference between a wrap and a perfect paint job. Vinyl wraps are what is now used to cover every modern, super expensive race car in the World. Plus, if you do get too bored at looking at that new color, you just rip off the vinyl and you again have your original paint job in perfect shape, without any new extra expenses.

Re: vinyl wrap my cayman s???

Agree, there are many exotics that are being wrapped these days and for the very reasons you have stated.

Its funny how some people can diss something they have not tried yet or taken the time to fully understand it before being critical.

OK personally I have had a 911 wrapped before and would NOT recommend it. Some may say its a question of skill but even so, there are just some applications that are more challenging than others.

Lambos and Ferraris (in general) tend to be easier to do as they are less curvy. The most problematic area for the 911 is the rear engine area and spoiler. Both the curvature and high heat make a combi that is not best for vinyl application. Aside from that there have been numerous examples where the outcome is nothing short of brilliant! Hey if racing cars have had this for years why not street cars?

Re: vinyl wrap my cayman s???

Has anyone here considered a permanent electromagnetic force field? That would not only protect the paint, but has the added benefit of repelling thieves and other vermin! 987f

Re: vinyl wrap my cayman s???

Over here in Dubai almost every other super car has seems to be vinyl wrapped from matt black to 2 tone black/red/gold.

I have seen a cayman S with vynil wrap on black and i have to tell you.... IT LOOKED AMAZING... but he has the tail lights option in red...and the caymans logo on the back in red too.... it really looked good and everyone was staring at it when it would pass by them( i drov close to him for a while admring it)

And as some have posted it costs less protects more and and you can take it off anytime your bored of it. In my opinion if you know a good workshop who can do the job well.... go for it.

You wont regret it and neither will your wallet.
