Re: 3m clear film

My car is wrapped in it all except the roof, hatch and rear bumper. I had it put on at Princeton Porsche (a site sponsor), they did a great job. They do not apply a precut pattern which leaves a gap around trim and the 3m covering which is more visible then you might think. They remove the trim, install the film and reinstall the trim. The main problem is it brings out any blemishes in your paint (only noticeable at close inspection). The film is removable and doesn't damage the paint.

Re: 3m clear film

Once you have made a decision to have the product installed, the next questions would be:

1. which areas? generally the areas behind the tires in addition to the front
2. partial hood or full hood? full hood if you do not like seeing a line. It also makes it easier to clean / wax.

Re: 3m clear film

Check out the Nor'Easter section.

I had the lower section of my car done by Detailing Dynamics in Jan of 2008 and everything is still looking good.

Retired-Teach had the same areas done on his white Cayman S this past January and everything is fine so far.

Pistol Pete, Can you tell me what you paid for the film on the lower section of your car?

Re: 3m clear film

I had 3M installed when I purchased mine, just saved a nasty paint chip for sure. Was buzzin down a major highway up here and they had started to tear up the asphalt and still had the road in service which bummed me out, I thought they could have shut the two lanes down but anyway, some clown comes flying past me and makes a lane change to get in front of me and shortly after that I heard something hit the car, didn't know where cuz it was at night.

Next morning go to wash the car and I had forgot about the night b4's ding. Found it on the bonet 1" from the badge. At first I thought it was a crusted on bug of some sort so I got out my clay bar. Turns out it was part of the bra that took the licking, paint underneath was not touched. No doubt there would have been a nice stone chip and a sick owner had the bra not been installed. Worth the price I paid for it right there.....

In this case, how can you patch the 3M film? Would the patch show?

Re: 3m clear film

You would replace the film if it did not look good. Which means you are up for $ but less than if you went to a panel shop.

BTW, Im finding a lot a gravel rash near the side vents. Im sure this is due to using R-Spec tyres.

May I ask how, when and where did you obtain such record? Does your CS have an aftermarket turbo?

Re: 3m clear film

totally worth it, and get the full hood - the line is unsightly and b/c the cayman sits so low, gravel and etc will scratch up the upper hood easily

definitely money well spent, IMHO

Re: 3m clear film

My car does not have a turbo and all mods are simple bolt-ons. You can refer to my blog notes for more info. Time was at the local drag strip.

I agree. I didn't get a bra for my car, since a full cover wasn't available, and I detest the line. The first nicks that I received on my hood were above the area where a partial bra covers.

So, if you get a partial bra, count on getting nicks in the paint in an area that is more visible than the area beneath the bra coverage.

I have had the 3M clear bra for 2 years and no issues. Also for the head lights they should use a thicker film.

Re: 3m clear film

i just had a quote from my dealer in southern ontario to install the
3M on the bumper, fenders, hood, and mirrors for $1100 plus taxes. Does this sound reasonable? I have no idea on the cost of this product.
