Garage Queen or High Mileage Driver

A driver should have most of the kinks worked out.

I'm not big on garage queens, but a 993 turbo would be an awesome car to have!

I guess the premise is that you are buying used in both cases?

I chose 'garage queen' because I would spend the money on one car, but I would still drive it. A lot.

And I don't even have a garage, you can call home and ask my wife... (5 points for the first person who names that semi-obscure reference)

It really depends on what you want. Do you want a "collectible" car or a drive-the-snot-out-of-it car? Will this be a track/AutoX/fun car, or a concours, show-it-off car?

If you like to display expensive modern art, get the "collectible" car and never drive it.

If you want to drive something unusual, get the "collectible" car, but expect that the car's value will plummet as you put the miles on.

If you want to have fun and not worry about the car's value, get the older car and save the rest of the money for ugrades and repairs.

Oh, BTW, be prepared: the garage queen will probably require significant repairs down the road. Cars, especially Porsches, need to be driven. If not driven, seals dry up and crack, fluids gum up and clog things, moisture accumulates and causes corrosion, etc -- most people don't appreciate that garage queens require at least as much maintenance as a daily driver. One of the more-common problems with 993 is that the air injection systems clogs with carbon when the car isn't driven hard; this is very expensive to fix, since it requires an engine overhaul.

Not sure that I would use it as a garage queen but the 993 Turbo S if by far my favorite Porsche. I would buy one in a minute if I could find a low mileage one for a fair price. Some of the asking prices on the 993 turbo S are just a little to high for me at present.

In your opinion what makes the 993 Turbo S so special. I am new to Porsche cars on a intimate level. Always admired from a distance but because I never thought I would own one, I never learned the details of those I grew up loving ( widebody 911, 944 turbo, 911 turbo).

About the poll....I voted garage queen because I assumed this particular purchase was in addition to the Cayman....so I thought....drive the hell out of the CS and take the 993 out occasionally. I would like that set up.

Just found this description:

"The limited run 993 Turbo S was Porsche’s final celebration of the legendary 911. No less than 450bhp is was produced from the Turbo’s flat 6 allowing the pocket rocket to dip under 4sec for the sprint to 60mph and on to a near 190mph maximum.

The colour coded interior was finely trimmed in carbon fibre and leather while the exterior sported bespoke alloys and a new bi-plane rear spoiler. Road holding was superb thanks to lowered and stiffened suspension, surpassed only by the level of braking produced by the 32cm cross drilled, vented disks. The 911 had now come of age, finally matching the power and performance of the legendary 959."

I think that says a lot.
