Interesting side note...

As soon as the driver can be left out of the equation, these tests will be run without them.

Kinda. Simulations, dynomometer time and five-post rigs get them close, but it's also about making the car faster in the hands of the guys that drive them. If a setting should be faster, but isn't, it sometimes comes down to technique and style of the drivers. That's one of the things in endurance racing is pairing drivers who are fastest with similarly developed setups.
