bought a 914
Bought a 914, it was on e-bay, now to get it home and running and to see what I got. Was able to check out the car, a little rust but looks like only some of the seams, and battery tray area. A dented pass door and RR quarter panel.Planing to to make it into a auto-x and something to drive to work.

Re: bought a 914
Jeez beat me to the punch.I too am looking at such a purchase but from the daily driver end of the deal.goodluck with your car and good for you.I believe that some of the older driver quality cars still return decent mpg and are at a level where they are both affordable and worth saving and also have the potential for a decent return upon resale. Not a bad deal

Re: bought a 914
Up until the Cayman (and excluding the 917 and other race oriented models) the 914 was the ONLY non-911 that I ever liked. Now that I'm older I love all things Porsche but the 914 is a great little car. I'd love to have one as a track car or even club racer.
Good luck!

Re: bought a 914
Just something to have fun with, will have to get it running it has not run in a few years and see what I have, hey for $1000 and all of the parts are there something that I could run at the track and not worry about. My CS is to me big investment, also with the smog laws in Calif. you really cant do much once it needs to be inspected. And the 914 is a 73 so no smog checks.

+1 I'm jealous. As much as I enjoy tracking my CS that wall always seems a little too close for comfort! Since I'm financially upside down on the car...that would be a very bad thing.

Congratulations!! It really is a fun car. I loved the look of this car when I saw them new (barely a teenager, growing up in Austin). Now, we have a Signal Orange '75 914. Although previous owner replaced the engine, we've had to do transmission service (clutch may be about to go), electrical system (alternator & regulator), starter. Body was in great shape. Was advised NOT to install heater, because it blows in hot air from around the exhaust manifold.
It takes muscle to steer and stop. At least it is electronically simple - e.g. if you have to push-start it due to dead battery or starter, just use SECOND gear (not 1st), turn on the key, and get up to 20 mph before popping the clutch.
Check the site early next week for pictures of ours, together with its big brothers - 2007 911 TT and 2009 Cayman S. Plan a family photo...

Re: bought a 914
My sister cant wait to drive it as she had a 914 in the late 70's. But it will be a while till it hits the streets.

Re: bought a 914
I've always had a love affair w/ the 914 since I was a teenager. Congrats. There's a series in Excellence about a guy who has done a major rework of his 914, it's a multipart and he's putting in a 3.6L from a 993 if I remember correctly. As you know rust is the enemy, and that battery tray is infamous. Based on the bumperettes you've got a later car and I thought they were a little better "rustproofed" than the 70-72s. Keep us all posted as you progress w/ the car.

Re: bought a 914
Its a very early 73. Not to much rust, some around the battery and rear trunk, but on the whole it is very good. Still trying to figure which way I want to go, do want to be able to drive it on the street.

Re: bought a 914
I'd keep it streetable, summer evenings w/ roof off, just too much fun to pass up. There are a lot of guys who have turned their 914s into track monsters but it's a single use vehicle. The 914 comes from an era where you could have a lot of fun going "fast" w/o a lot of power or speed.

Re: bought a 914
Have a friend, Richard in Orlando Florida, that is in the final process of a total rebuild Porsche 914. Plans to Auto-x and enjoy. Here is his email
sc91183@earthlink.net. I told him about your plans for your 914, so if you need additional info or help, send him an email.

Re: bought a 914
Thanks for the e-mail. Its like the more I look at it the more of a shame it would be to make it into a pure race car, the body except for the dents down the right side and the little rust in the trunk and battery area the body is in really good shape. I will probably switch it to carbs, but thinking to keep the rest stock, or nearly stock.

Re: bought a 914
Boy, am I jealous. When I was a kid that car was everything to me - it is the first time I thought, "when I grow up I'm gonna own a Porsche."
I'm gonna go tell the wife that we're getting another car......
