Advice please on trading a base for S??

Hi everyone...need some advice. First of all, I love my 2008 Cayman base so I want you to know that first of all. Most certainly if I keep it that would be just fine. BUT, have come across an S model with auto trans. and some nice options...it has roughly 850 miles on it. My car only has 1300 on it. My car also has manual trans which is fine but I really feel like going to the auto (yes I know you all can laugh now). Anyhow, wrote the dealer to see what his offer was.....almost fell off my chair....10,000 difference. I told him to forget it...and that I would give him 2,000.00 difference knowing he wouldnt take that but what the heck I tried. He came back with his final offer of 7,000.00 difference which is still too high in my book. I owe approx. 36,000 on my car and he is asking 42,000 for the S model. What do you all think? My car is the meteor gray which I love as a color and his is the ruby red which also is very sharp.

Re: Advice please on trading a base for S??

What is the difference between your car new, as configured and the CS new, as configured. Then a depreciation percentage assigned to each car for mileage should come up to a true difference. Anything above that is profit for the dealer. And you should expect them to make profit.

That profit margin then becomes the amount that you have to decide if it is worth it or more power and an automatic.

Say a Cayman was $59K and a CS was $68K. Well that's $9K difference. And what if the actual value on blue book was 20% less. Then you get $47.2K and $54.4K respectively. The difference is then $7.2K.

Anything above that is outside the cost of the extra features. It may not be too bad of a deal. A set of tires can cost $2K.

And maybe you can get lower interest rate than you currently have ...

Re: Advice please on trading a base for S??

kmag54,

You stated that your base is a 2008 with 1300 miles on it. Then you mentioned a CS (auto) with 850 miles on it. Is it also a 2008? I don't want to assume anything.

If it is a 2008 CS with 850 miles on it then it sounds like a pretty fair price to me for the car. Do you have any cash put away that you can help offset some of your negative equity?

I had a similar situation back in 2007. I traded in my base 2007 (manual) for a 2007 CS (auto) but the dealer gave me full payoff (and some) for my base and I gave them cash for the difference.

I do have to be honest with you and tell you that I LOVE the CS more than I did the base. Sometimes I miss the actual "shifting" but then again I also have some heavy traffic in this part of Florida that offsets that with NOT having to shift!

I drive in "manual" mode almost all the time and love it. I have several friends with Cayman S' and they always comment on how hard my car pulls even though it is an auto.

The Borla and desnork probably helps!

Re: Advice please on trading a base for S??

Thanks for the responses. I am sorry if I didnt state this but the S is indeed a 2008 and it does have low mileage at 800 plus. In my case I owe approx. 36,000 and some change on my base...should I approach them with the idea that they pay off my loan and I would in turn give them 7,000.00?? The msrp on my car was 55,000.00 approx. and they claim theirs was 67,000.00 just to let you know. Again, I appreciate the help and if you have anymore advice I am an eager listener. Just do not want to give my car away since it is a very very sharp car.

Also...if anyone has a dealer/s they would like to recommend or know of a low mileage S in their area I am all ears.

Thanks Kent

Re: Advice please on trading a base for S??

I say jump on it before he sells it to someone else ... cost me a lot more than that to go from a base 987 Boxster to a Cayman S. Besides, all sports cars are RED, the others are mistakes!

Sounds like a pretty fair deal to me.
