I wouldn't buy a PDK car without Sport Chrono Plus unless you wanna shift with the buttons all the time. Without SCP the gears change at an irritatingly low RPM unless you gun it.

Just my 2 cents - ymmv
The only thing it seems everybody on the forum agrees on as far as options on the car is the bi-xenons. that is a must have.
My old dad used to say, wait on any new transmission/engine for a few years until the bugs have been worked out.
I'd go with the 08, myself and get them to throw in clear corners (installed).

Re: distressed lady buying: 09 Cayman pdk vs 08 Cayman s Tip
Since the new Caymans have minimum 265 HP, you're only giving up 30 HP to the '08 Cayman S cars you're looking at - not too bad. You should drive them both so you can see the quantum leap from the Tiptronic to the PDK - it's huge. And since they're equipped with Sport Chrono, the PDK will sing when you want it to. The 2.9 also is the new-style engine block, which is MUCH improved. Although the 2.9 doesn't have the direct fuel injection of the new CS, I personally don't think that's all that big a deal with the base Cayman.
Depends what you're after - you'll definitely feel a 30 HP difference, but if that's not your main reason for getting one of these cars, the '09s have the latest and greatest, with the biggest difference coming in the form of the new-version motor and the PDK.
Good luck,
brad

DFI
|
 |
Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), is a new technology that Porsche states can cut fuel consumption by up to 15 percent, while increasing power by up to 13 percent. DFI cuts emissions by warming up the catalytic converter more quickly, and ensures a sharper throttle response. Better for your right foot - and the planet, then.
DFI allows much more precise measurement of fuel supply and injection at pressures up to 120 bar; it has numerous combustion modes, with different cycles for cold-starting, low-speed driving and performance driving.
As the name suggests, DFI injects fuel directly into the individual combustion chambers, instead of the intake manifold. The injector valves have an electromagnetic mechanism that controls each injection with astonishing precision, while a high-pressure pump provides the necessary pressure—up to 1,740 psi—to accompany the rapid fire of the fuel injection.
Precise geometry of the injector’s position and its spray pattern is a key factor in helping to improve power, torque and emissions of the engines. The specific placement of the fuel as it enters each chamber creates a swirl that improves the air/fuel mixture, and therefore the overall combustion process.
At engine speeds up to 3500 rpm, a double-injection process is used. In this mode, the required fuel volume is delivered in two successive injections per working stroke. The resulting benefits include faster catalyst warm-up and increased torque in the upper load range.
By forming the air/fuel mix directly in the combustion chamber, DFI contributes to engine cooling. As a result, it is possible to increase the compression ratio and with it the power and efficiency of the engine.
The direct injection process is continuously adjusted. The engine management system reads changes to throttle inputs and performance requirements and, as you drive, the air/fuel mix is monitored and adapted as required. Oxygen sensor circuits within the exhaust system provide accurate emissions control. |

Re: distressed lady buying: 09 Cayman pdk vs 08 Cayman s Tip
I guess that's what they call a happy dilemma.
Well, I don't think you will be giving up much performance going from an 08 Tip CS to an 09 Cayman/PDK, and I didn't think dealers were discounting the 09s that much yet, so if it were me, I'd probably take one of the 09s if they had colors I liked.
Of course, that just my opinion . . . you won't be disappointed by whichever you choose.

I was in your very position 3 weeks ago (except with the boxster) and with the sports chrono and PDK took the 09 without much hestiation and couldn't be happier...

Personally, I would consider getting a lightly used 08 and spend the extra $20k on whatever ladies in distress buy these days. Spa visits? Assault rifles?
I just wish I were in a position to benfit from the economic downturn somehow...

Re: distressed lady buying: 09 Cayman pdk vs 08 Cayman s Tip
jenn,
IF you went with the '09 Cayman:
a) you'd give up the Bose (no heartache here)
b) you'd give up the Electric Seats (major if you must share the car with someone very much 'different')
c) you'd give up the 30 HP (drive them both- hard! The 30 HP will not make up the difference of the Sports Chrono IMHO)
d) you'd give up the Bi-Xenon headlamps (I have no idea how much difference from 'stock')
BUT
You would get:
e) Heated Front Seats (this was a major plus to driving with windows open in Winter)
f) 18" Wheels anyway (smoother than 19", less wimpy than 17")
g) Universal Audio & Bluetooth Interface (ipod & cell phone territory)
h) 7-speed DPK with Sport Chrono (PUMP ME UP!)
...IMHO, go with the '09 'non-S' at equal price.

Re: distressed lady buying: 09 Cayman pdk vs 08 Cayman s Tip
pdk enables 0-60 in nearly a second quicker than tiptronic. pdk is 0.3-0.4 second quicker than a manual and a manual is about a 0.7 to 0.8 seconds quicker than the old tiptronic. so pdk is a little over a second than the old tiptronic. if you really don't care about aggressive shifting or fuel efficiency then get the 08 tiptronic.
you could get a 09 base cayman with pdk and sports chrono and it would be faster than an 08 cayman s with tiptronic and sports chrono.

The Collection in Miami was taking off $10,000 on any new 08 Porsche in stock. I don't know what's left but it might be worth calling them. Ask for Eddie at (305) 444-5555.

I don't know about the 09's but I know for fact that the 08 you are considering is way over priced. It should be less than $46. I've seen a similar car with warranty punched Jan 09 with 19" wheels for $46k. I think yours does not have the 19" wheels. My offer will be $45 or even a low ball of $44 should be good.

thread hijack! Would a base 09 PDK be just as fast as a 06-08 S manual?

Re: distressed lady buying: 09 Cayman pdk vs 08 Cayman s Tip
with pdk and sport chrono and launch control, you may get a similar 0-60 time, to the Gen1 S but overall it's not going to have the same power in other situations. It's still a great car though.

I would say it depends on the driver but I recently drove an 07 S Manual and an 09 PDK base back to back. I thought the S felt faster and had a better sound...plus I didn't care for the button shifting system that porsche used...glad they are going to be going to paddles.
