Do you get the title of a pre-owned car right away when paying in cash?

I have never purchased a pre-own Porsche before, and I was told that no Porsche dealership will give you the title when you hand over a check for the car. And that it would take up to a month before I'll be able to get it after paying them. Is this the norm? I would hate to hand over $55,000 for a pre-owned car and not get the title right there and then...especially in this economy where dealerships can close at any moment's notice, and you're out of $55 grand. Thanks.

I bought my new '10 cayman for cash from the dealer and the title came in the mail from them a month later, I believe your state motor vehicle registry actually generates and manages the titles.

bought my car cash as well, and my title took a bit over 2 1/2 months, but that's b/c the stupid lady forgot to put in my paper work. i called her when my temp tag expired and then she "found" it and mailed it (bought car out of state). i got it about 2.5 weeks later.

a month is completely normal for waiting to get a new title. they actually print you out an entirely new one.

Thanks for the reply guys. But I'm not talking about a new car. I purchased the BMW 535 Xdrive last year new, too, and it took a month to get my title. But I'm talking about a used Porsche, where someone else sold the car back to Porsche or traded it back in. Shouldn't that dealership have the title in-hand?

Normally, the dealership handles the paperwork and sends the title stuff to the state dmv to process. Depending upon the state, that may take 2 weeks to a month to process. About the only time you'll get a title immediately is through a private sale.

i bought my '08 CS used in April, paid via cash, they do not give you the title immediately. i've never bought a used car at a major dealership and they've given me the title the same day. they have to put it in for processing. my family has bought about a 1/2 dozen cars that way and it's all taken 2weeks to a month depending on if you're buying in-state or out-of-state. of course, out-of-state purchases take a bit longer. but once the state gets the paper work, it's only a few weeks.

The one we are negotiating with is from out of state. Thanks for all the answers everyone.

The make of car has nothing to do with the title or the process of handling the title. Each state is a little different, but in most, the title is sent in to the state for processing, then sent to the owner or bank.
Even if the sale is out-of-state, you will normally not get the title at the time of the transaction. The dealership will process the paperwork, make sure your check clears and then mail you the title, usually within 10 days. You will then have to do the DMV paperwork in your state, send in the title and then wait 4-6 weeks to get your title back from your state.

Florida now keeps titles until the owner asks for one. It's not really needed unless you're selling the car or moving to another state. As long as you get the registration and a permanent tag, you are good to go.

Re: Do you get the title of a pre-owned car right away when paying in cash?

It depends on the state in question. In California, new cars purchased and leased or financed, have an electronic title registered with the state DMV and with the lien recorded. Once the car is re-sold for cash to an end user, the actual paper title is generated and mailed to that user. I suspect in the state you live in, this might be the same as the dealer does not have an original title on hand.

When I sold my financed Cayenne, the purchaser was beside himself at not being able to get the title immediately. Seems he wanted to get that vehicle on a boat to Shanghai right away.
