Would you ever buy a Cayman/Boxster from Carmax?

Do you have any faith in their car inspection process? And is there any way to get the tacky sticker off?

Re: Would you ever buy a Cayman/Boxster from Carmax?

I have heard both good and bad expirences with Carmax and P-cars. I feel it really depends on the previous owner, is the owner dumping the car becasue of issues or no longer interested in owning the vehicle? Or did CM offer the best trade-in price (did that before CM offered me $1500 more than the dealer). From what i've seen the ones coming off of leases seem to be the better maintained vehicles, usually 3-4 years old with around 20-25K miles. I would recommend either scheduling a PPI at a dealer within the 5 day return policy and take advantage of their extended warranty which is accepted at all Porsche dealerships nationwide.

This applies to purchasing pre-owned from a dealer too, identify any and all issues and have them address them prior to purchasing the vehicle. It may take additional time and effort, but you will be happier in the long run

Here's my bad Carmax experience. I won't ever shop there again.

One thing to keep in mind with them. They make it seem like they only sell cherry cars that haven't been in an accident. In reality, they only turn down cars that have had frame damage or other significant damage. What this means is that if the car doesn't have a salvage title, most likely they'd have no problem putting it on their lot. Caveat emptor, my friend.

It has been my experience that they offer much more than most dealerships on all kinds of cars. Therefore a P-car owner may be dumping it there for the obvious increase in cash value.

CarMax is like pretty much any other used car dealership, except that they tend to be quite more generous with offers when buying used cars off people. One just needs to exercise caution and good judgement when buying from them, just like you would with any other used car dealer.

Re: Would you ever buy a Cayman/Boxster from Carmax?

In short, no, I wouldn't buy a used sports car from any dealership. I highly recommend buying from a private seller, and preferably an original owner. I've successfully advised several friends over the years in these matters, and have never had a negative result. You can tell so much by talking to the car's owner and primary driver. Many even have detailed logs they can show you of every time they put gas in it, no less service records. My advice is always to find someone's pampered pride and joy. I especially like the ones that claim "never driven in rain". You probably can't find a minivan this way, but pampered sports cars are everywhere.

You may have to travel to find the right vehicle, but I think the chances of finding an unmolested car in honestly represented condition is much higher. Even if the salesperson is open and honest, who knows what the dealer's car jockeys have done to it?

Looking over the classifieds for Caymans on this site shows some very promising candidates. I remember a couple of ads on this site where I've been tempted, and I haven't personally bought a used car in 35 years.
